Building Up A 351M.

Not looking to get crazy power, just looking for a good rough idle and a little more giddy up. I am either going to buy a short block and build it how I want it or gather all the parts and build the motor I have. I am just wondering what you all would do. Money is not an option. I know I will be upgrading cams, heads, carb, etc. Just not sure what exactly to get. Any help is appreciated.

I wont be swapping for a 460 because I dont want to change transmission and I don't need that big of a motor, so dont bring it up unless you are going to give me a motor and tranny.

Hi, the tranny for the 351M and the 460 are the same so you don't need one if you did want to go to a 460 . Myself and my opinion is I would never waste the time or money on a 351m, some guys like them, I don't. Gutless and terrible on fuel. My 429 and 460's gave the same or better fuel milage but the power gains were awesome. I am about to pull a 351M from my 78 plow truck and put in a 460, mounts need to be made cause it's a 4X4 or bought from aftermarket but that's the only big thing that needs to be done. 460's are also fairly plentyfull and cheap and you wouldn't need to spend more money on it to get more power, they have enough. Again, just my opinion.

460 with C6 trans.

My 460 has a performer 460 intake, 650 Holley 4 barrel, everything else is stock and it has plenty of power.

I read multiple places I would have to change the tranny for a 460. I have an automatic, does that matter? Im retarded with old engines/transmissions.

.

i have done 351m and 400 swaps to 460 its the same transmission equal and most time better gas mileage and performance parts are easier to come by grab a good 460 port and polish heads throw on edelbrock performer intake a 650-750 carb and headers and you got one mean motor scooter and a hell of a go getter

Mine is an automatic. You probably have a C6.

I was looking at your pic's and if you are building a 4X4 you will need to buy /make the frame mounts, L&L sells them for about 75 bucks if I remember right. The tranny will bolt up std. or automatic, I had to go to a bigger rad because I was towing a large 5th wheel with it but the stock rad should be ok if you are not going to work her too hard.
And hey, 3 different guys replied so far with the same ansewer, put in a 460 and dump the pig.

I have 3 here now, one's an EFI but I think the shipping would be a BIT too much. Eastern Canada to Illinios = Buy a new one.

A refurbished block runs around $2500.

Here's one on ebay for $125, it's dirty though.

I am going to build it with my father in law. We are going to put it on a engine stand and rebuild/upgrade everything. I won't pay $2500 for something I can do basically myself. Good to get an idea of what they run.
