73/77 Steering Wheel on 78/79 Column

the questions is, can you put a 73-77 steering wheel on a 78-79 steering column?

Not really sure but if you go to something like Grant Steering wheels and see if the adapter is the same for all years the wheel then would be the same.

But my guess is yes.

I believe the horn and turn signal cancelling is different on those column's and steering wheels. I think it will work but might need some mods to work properly.

I'm sure someone has done it and will chime in.

My opinion of the Grant adapter is low.

I wanted to put a real nice 79 wheel i had on my 73, but the horn and signals don't look to be a match. So i'm stuck with using the damaged 73 wheel until i change the complete column out later this year. I had a grant wheel in another vehical , it was crap , originals are better.

Try giving it a re-read.

The top of the 73 - 77 column is 3.5" and the 78-79 are 4" ,so the wheels are a different size. They look out of place on the wrong year of column even if they will work, I tried it and never liked it.

Ok, reread.

My opinion is unchanged. The flaw is in the pins they use for the signal canceling not staying in the holes in the adapter and the the holes in the plates and adapter were off just enough to make it a gigantic pain to assemble.

Maybe I just got that one adapter that was slightly off.

I realize there are thousands of these on Fords...just not on mine.

I put a Grant wheel on my '76 and while not the ideal solution, its ok. The good thing is the pins worked fine at canceling the TS, the bad is the horn works sporadically and the horn button likes to pop off at times. It had a later model wheel on it and it didnt look out of place but the horn didnt work and the canceling cam was missing.

Thanks, good information but my plans are to put the C/4 back in after i get it rebuilt . I thought i would like the 3 on the tree standard so i put it back in,but i guess i'm getting to old and lazy to shift gears. When i do that i will put in one of the 79 columns i have with the good looking wheels on them.___

You can buy new 1971-1977, D4TZ-3600-A style wheels from Dennis Carpenter.

Why install something that won't work rightly unless you swap columns?
