1993 Poor Idle, Smells like Fuel
Hi all,
I am sure this has been discussed before but I am not exactly the best at searching for threads, that being said I will ask what I have going on. I recently bought a 1993 F-150 with a 5.8L, when I bought the truck it ran GREAT, of course I didn't see any problems until after we had it for a week or so. What I am experiencing is mainly the beast won't idle, if you hold your foot on the gas pedal it will run, and it seems to drive fine down the road but at idle most of the time it dies. I replaced the fuel filter and it ran great for about 100 miles, I checked the fuel pressure and the reading I got was horrible, at first it didnt read anything, but eventually it got up to 30, not sure if my guage was getting a faulty reading but thats what it got, when it is running poorly it smells like the truck is running very rich, also it makes no difference whether you are using the front or the rear tank, exactly the same on both. The weirdest thing is it does not do this all the time, just in the most inopportune moments. Hopefully someone has an idea what to do, Thanks in advance

Do the symptoms correlate with anything like engine temp or driving conditions? If you can get a better idea of when the truck does it it will probably help with diagnosis. The only thing I can really say, and it likely won't help, is check the codes. I believe 30psi is too low, my understanding is it should be more like 45 or so. Maybe a bad fuel pressure regulator?

It may be that your ECM (computer) that's failing.
If it is failing, it may or MAY NOT DISPLAY ANY trouble codes.
Click this link and do some reading:A9x ECM's (and same years ECM's) Failures Due to Age
It doesn't take long to remove and visually inspect the ECM.
Look for the obvious "leaking capacitor(s)" thing happening or burned chips, burnt marks on the circuit board, etc..
If all looks good, reinstall the ECM and then try and retrieve (if any) KOEO/KOER and CM codes and report back.
Intermittant problems are the most difficult to find, but many of us have now realized that a good source of intermittant problems can be caused by a failing/failed ECM.
Let us know what you find,
Bob
My take for what you have going on...........
Bob
