New member, old truck

Just picked up a 1960 f100 4x4 with the smaller straight six. Was a three on the tree, but the transmission was replaced with a '57 four-speed and a three-speed transfer case. Came with lots of extra parts, including another engine, old transfer case and axles and radiator and other misc stuff. Needs a master cylinder and runs, although a bit rough. I got it home with no brakes. It seems to run best with the choke on, not sure why. I'm a total Ford newby and live in Marquette, MI. Any general advice would be great. Have an extra master cylinder but the existing brake linkage is too long. Overall, the cab is rough-steps are rusted out and fender are rough all around...

Welcome to the land of forgotten fords! Glad you got a nice truck. Looks kind of complete from the pic you posted. If you are serious about it, you will end up tearing it down to nothing and rebuilding. 50 years of sitting around can have that effect on a truck!

Thanks all. It's nearly road-ready. I'm looking for a replacement or original air filter for my single-barell carb. Any ideas?

Thinking both. I don't care if they are original or not, a replacement would be better than the ATV-looking air filter that's no there now.

Paper element? I-6 & V8 trucks came with oil bath air cleaners as standard equipment thru 1967.

The only vehicles with 223's that came with dry type (paper filter) air cleaners were 1957/64 Ford passenger cars.

1968 was the first year that Ford offered dry type (paper filter) air cleaners for trucks. The oil bath's became an option (thru 1979).

I see it has rust out in the usual places, though it's not as bad as mine ('59 4WD). You can get patch panels for that rarely reasonable. I wish I had your mirrors, they are not easy to find around here. The 223 engine is a good one and these trucks are geared to pull a barn down.
I also like the color. (Help me out here guys, Meadow Green?) That paint was also used as a primer for other colors.

welcome to the club tim! i am always glad to see another old factory 4x4 being saved and loved on. i am single handedly trying to save every one that i find. glad you are helping. dont get me wrong guys.............nothin against a 2wd fridge, i would just rather have all the wheels pulling. looks like a pretty straight truck and as already stated repair panels should be easy for you as it is a f100. if you have a few weeks to wait i should be getting my hands on a factory 223 oil bath air cleaner for that one barrel carb. just keep fixing bits and pieces as you drive and enjoy it and before you know it years will have passed and your wallet will be empty. plus you will have a truck few have and few have seen. keep in mind its 52 years old and you drove it home. there's alot of late model junk out there that cant do that! good luck and dont be afraid to ask stupid questions. i do!! these guys on fte are great!!
