96 F250 HD 4x4 351 auto. I believe my front axle; Dana 50 is giving me some trouble. It’s making a grinding growling sound when turning right. Noticing the noise more when it is warm, after she has been going down the road for an hr or so. When its cold it doesn’t seem to make as much noise but I can still here / feel it, it’s just not as noticeable. This is in two wheel drive, 4 wheel drive didn’t make much difference.

I have pulled auto hubs, test, made no difference. Again it is in 2wd I pulled the drive shaft, still making the noise, Crazy right, nothing should be spinning the ring gear at this time. While under the truck spinning the front axle shafts by hand with the truck on the ground I feel resistance in the front axle shaft, more right, passenger side than left, not enough to stop it from spinning but enough to notice. Pull both axle shafts, all ujoints, wheel bearings spindle bearings look good, I replaced one ujoint and repacked the wheel bearings last winter. My fear is the problem is in the carrier.

Question, can the carrier be dropped without taking down the right swing arm? The truck is being supported on jack stands right behind the rear front spring hangar. Seems like a tight fit, my leaf spring bolts look like they are in bad shape and I don’t have a fire wrench to cut them off. Can the carrier be reassembled correctly with all the bracketry in place? How much dose that thing weigh, it looks as if it might squish me once it starts dropping.

Question, I was in such a hurry pulling the right axle shaft apart, where you have to pull it out of the boot, I forgot to mark it from the stub shaft that remains in the carrier. Can anyone tell me or send me a pic of how to phase these shafts back in place?
Id appreciate any help at all.

I'm really on the fence, do I keep going and save a few bucks or put it back together and let a professional take care of it and hope they can do it right.

Before anyone says roll a 60 under it, and Id like to. if I did I could no longer fit the truck into my silly little garage, so height is an issue.

Did I ask the question the wrong way or doesn't anyone care to comment on removing the dana 50 carrier while it is in the truck?

Id love to answer.. But I honestly do not know.

How does your fluid look? I worked in auto shops and sometimes when the rear end made noise it meant change the fluid. I would and it would be fine (no metal in fluid). Just a thought.

from what I can tell the fluid looks good, but the only way to really know is to drain it, and the only way I know how to drain it would be to pull the carrier or drill a whole. If I drilled a whole, I'd see metal from drilling, but wouldn't know if something bad is going on in the carrier or not.

I'm not sure if you can pull the carrier in the truck, but it sounds to me like you have bad wheel bearings, not anything to do with the front diff.

No cover on the front diff you can remove? You would not be removing the carrier as it will still all be attached with bolts in the diff housing.

(Forgive me for not knowing off hand. Been a long time since I played with light auto work)

For Bobs response.. It could be a wheel bearing but you said you inspected and repacked them, yes? Everything turn well and smooth?

There should be a plug on the front of the diff that you can remove and suck the fluid out with a pump. I have owned several TTB trucks and they have all had one.

The diff itself can be removed from the truck if you remove the driveshaft, axle shafts, and the bolts on the front of the diff. I have even driven around with the diff removed for a bit.

I also dont think its a diff issue. Did you look at he ball joints?
