No, I'm not back in the dating world. I ran out of fuel for the second time yesterday. When I get to about 5/8 of a tank on my gauge, which I've determined is accurate, I run out of fuel. The first time it happened I was taking a friend for a drive to impress him with my diesel conversion and we ended up beside the road. I of course thought it was clogged fuel filter, so I swapped it out and filled the new filter with diesel (he has a tank at his place). Well I got about a half mile and coast to a stop. I filled the tank and have been keeping it at 3/4 or so just in case. I have since read that the pick up tube can rust off specially on trucks like mine that sat many years....Yesterday it got lower than that on a trip to town and quit. With good fortune, I coasted down the mile long hill and right up to the pump in town. Filled it up and it started right up and was fine. I have an electric auxillary fuel pump and didn't let it run completely out so didn't have to bleed the injectors. OK, so here's what I intend to do and a couple of questions. I bought a fitting meant to add a drain to an automatic transmission pan at napa. I'm gonna drill a 1/2" hole in the top of the tank next to the sender using a strong magnet to keep chips out of the tank. I tapped the top of the fitting for 1/8" pipe for an elbow and a hose barb. The bottom side leading into the tank I drilled it out for a tight fit on a new piece of 5/16" brake line which I'll solder in once I work out the length. I plan to set it about an inch off the bottom. Does that seem right? Also I see mention of a 'sock' on the bottom made from screen. I have some fiberglass window screen thought I could work that onto the end with a small hose clamp working through the sender hole. I have a large spin on fuel filter so maybe I can skip that step? I removed and flushed the tank last fall when I first got the truck, so I know it's relatively clean. Thanks, GB

 

So, I was wondering how you were getting that milage, coasting, ah ha, now I get it!

 

I make up for it by roaring up the hills smoking out the tourists on bicycles with my straight pipe sticking out the side. Got my new pick-up installed. I ended up pinching the bottom of the steel tube and making a series of partial hacksaw cuts about an 1/8th inch apart on both sides of the tube about an inch up. Kinda like a screen, but less to go wrong.

 

i wouldnt worry about the sock or screen GB. seems like that is something they need for gas engines to keep the crud out of fuel injectors. if you have the spin on filter i would think that would be plenty. im kinda confused about your tank though. if i recall my tank has a nipple on the bottom and not a tube running in from the top. then again, i dont look behind the seat much so i may be mistaken. i have had the opposite problem as you lately, my fresh carb rebuild went haywire when i removed the intake to fix my exhaust leak. fixed the leak but the rear float must have got hung up and was dumping more gas in the old girl than she knew what to do with. took me a few days to figure it out but pulled the bowls off and got it working last night. my daily driver gave up the ghost so big red has been put into daily service. now that i can hear the tires instead of the exhaust leak its alot more fun to drive. good luck with the tank!

 

Pretty sure mine is stock. It looks like a factory setup. The tank does have a drain at the bottom. Maybe on yours a PO had a problem like mine and just tapped into the drain fitting to draw the fuel. That's how the fuel gets out on my '37 and all the older fords I've had. They do tend to clog down there though. Mine is working fine, but I'll be holding my breath next time it gets below 3/4 full.......

 

The '60 F100 comes out of the top as all of them do I believe!

When you harrass tourist like that, you are giving them something to remember much more than pedaling thru some pine trees!

 

There is no sock or screen, in-cab fuel tank sending units have no provision for one, since they have no fuel pickup tube.

Fuel pickup tube fits into top of tank, then routes across and down the left (drivers) side. Then out thru a hole in the floor pan to the frame rail.

After 1979, Ford only furnished the screen with the sending unit. And, after 1979, the fuel sending unit's float was only furnished with the sending unit.
