Lifter Collapse ?

2004 With 03 engine. Started it up one morn with loud rpm related clicking in pas side of engine. We have a local guy that does a lot of 6.0 repair work took the truck to him and he is telling me that one of the lifters is collapsed. He is telling me we can replace all the lifters with out pulling engine and total disasemble of engine, is this possible? and is the collapse of a lifter common I havent read much about it on here. Truck actuly still runs fine and no codes show up on scan.

No experience with this but I'll offer an opinion . Did he pull the valve cover? I have seen several posts featuring bent rocker arms and pushrods. I think that's much more likely. Next most common is losing the roller off the end of the lifter. That takes out the cam in a few revolutions. It's my understanding the engine has to be torn down to get the cam out (even the crankshaft and pistons) and the
Lifters are literally THE last thing to come out. Hope it's a rocker arm or pushrods.

Yes valve cover is off. He ran his scope down to see the problem push tube is going into lifter. He says lifter roller is fine cam is fine. If this is exactly the problem can we just repace the lifters or do we have to remove the engine from truck and totaly tear it down.

I guess it's conceivably possible to change all the lifters with the engine in the truck, but I'm not sure it would be much faster than just pulling the engine. The branch tube covers at least the rear two lifters on each side, and to remove the branch tube you have to remove the rear cover, which can be done with the engine installed by sliding the trans back or removing it. But space is going to be tight, he might work faster with the engine in the open or the cab gone. Maybe Cheezit or M-chan can chime in, I know they each have different opinions on the benefits of removing cab to get the heads off, maybe the have opinions on pulling the engine or not.

If the cam is damaged you're screwed, the crankshaft has to come out to replace it so you're looking at a full rebuild.

texas tech is correct branch tube and heads have to be removed. so far as a lifter collapsed not seen it myself. i have seen bent push tubes broken rockers and bad rollers though. imo i would pull the engine.

I wonder that myself, if roller on lifter was bad would truck run fine and show no codes though? Also I cut oil filter open and found some metal in the filter not a lot but some. What baffels me is it still runs fine just has loud tick in it.

If the lifter comes out the top, why not just pull, inspect and replace? I know cams/lifters are worn in as a set but I think i would try to get away with doing the one in this case.

no need to replace a cam if its good. new lifters on an old cam is fine.
back to the op. the truck would more then likly run fine unless you had a lrage compression loss as a result.
