New member here saying hi and looking for a little advice.

I currently live in Alaska and am about to move to the Florida Panhandle. I'm only going to get to take 2 cars...and I have 3:

1) My "beater w/a heater" - 1994 Chevy K1500.
2) 2003 Tahoe - Wife's car and she loves it.
3) 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8

Take a guess which one is the getting sold? (To be fair, it was only bought to get me through this last winter...but it is a nice truck.)

Long story short, the Challenger is my hot rod and I don't like the idea of it being my only option as a driver. Especially as fragile as they build cars these days.

So after a long tour with the Chevy camp for trucks, I'm looking to return back to the Ford camp. Maybe its because I grew up watching "BigFoot." Maybe its because my Dad drove (and still drives) Ford Trucks when I was growing up. Whatever it is, I've come to the decision (and somehow managed to convince my wife) that I would like to get into a 70's Ford Truck. Love the look, the toughness, and the heritage.

But....there's a catch the wife insists on:

Its gotta have a backseat.

At first I thought this wouldn't be that bad. They made tons of trucks in the 70's right? I've had no shortage of searches turn that up. Then I got to digging...and digging...and lots more digging. And I've come to the conclusion that a Supercab might end up being a TALL order. I might get 1 in 100 that is a Supercab.

So whats the story? Are these things that rare? Or am I not looking in the right place?

Most of the 70s era supercabs I've seen have been F250 Camper Specials with 460s. I know that Ford made some in the F150 short bed version, but I just haven't seen many of those. If you move up to the 80s era supercabs, you will find more of them available.

 

look in las vegas CL you should always find a few rust free super cabs here...one in there now...no rust, or dents that I can see, runs for 1000.00

 

Around here they are all rotted out when you finally do find em. They were usually used as service trucks back in the day, so finding a nice one is tough

 

buy in the rust free south sell in the RUST FULL north, HAHAHAHAHA

 

Check out Craigslist in Colorado. I see them quite often and if they are from Colorado, usually not much rust and pretty decent shape. If they are from the mountain areas of Colorado, tend to be 4x4 and a little beat.

Also, check Seattle and Portland. Tons of bumps and dents.

I see them around from time to time. I saw an add for a 2wd LB f150 SC for $750 and it looked to be in fair shape. There was a real beat up 4x4 F250 for like $1500 not long ago and I've seen some nice 4x4 F250 SC's for under $4000.

The key to finding the right old vehicle is patience, money, and willingness to travel if need be. If you have least 2 of those 3 you should be able to find something you'll be happy with. They're not so hard to find that you need to jump on the first one you see either.

 

Long beds are much easier to find than short beds.

4wd only came on long beds.

I have a '74, F-100 short bed that I bought as a project & may be parting with. It's a So. Cal. truck with no rust, but it's also no where near running.

 

Welcome to FTE ! I looked for about 6 months here in Southern CA. They are around but my experience was anything decent people were really proud of and wanted what I considered a lot of $$$ for a project truck. I originally wanted a 74-75 to avoid smog issues here in Cali but ended up driving 2 hours to get my '78 F350 last April, which I could not be happier with. IMHO the 78-79 versions seemed to have held up better than the earlier years relative to rust but could have just ben the ones I looked at. Seems like there were always a few around the Los Angeles and Phoenix Az areas. I saved searches on ebay and all of the craigslists whithin 200 miles and check often (too often if you ask somepeople) Keep looking and you will find something! Good Luck!

 

Without a doubt. If a fella had a car hauler and could go git a couple dents at a time from southern states, he could make some good moolah reselling them in the northern states. California would be a good place to go get a whole semi-truck load of them. I think that would be a fun way to make a living.

 

use a craigslist searching tool like search tempest. it worked better before craigslist changed but still very useful. Thats your best bet, if you are willing to travel some.
