Value of a 460 Moter?
I have a 1978 ford F-150 Ranger. It has a 460 with a 4barrel carb. The motor has over 100,000 miles (I don't know exactly). The motor has a deep knocking sound as it runs, so I assume it threw a rod and would need to be rebuilt. What would y'all say something like this is worth?
I'm trying to figure out what to do with it all.
Thanks

If it "threw a rod" it'd have a big hole in block. A knock is typically caused by bad rod or main bearings. The knock you hear is the rod journal slapping up against what is left of the bearing up against the crankshaft.
A 460 with a knock? Depends if the crank and rods are still salvageable. Open it up and find out... otherwise, $100 tops for a mystery shortblock... the buyer could be buying junk.

It really does depend on what the engine is. What heads? If C8, C9 or D0 the heads alone go for up to $300 pr. (needing ran through the machine shop) here in Indianapolis. I guess D3 heads are decent heads as well. What is the casting number on the block? 2 or 4 bolt mains? Older blocks had lower deck height making for more compression. I would definitely tear it down before it broke though. Find out exactly what you have.

460: 1971 thru 1978 and some 1979's: The block casting number is: D1VE-6015-AB is an internally balanced engine / 1973/79's have D3VE heads.
Some 1979 460's: The block casting number is: D9TE-6015-AB is an externally balanced engine, has a weighted spacer.
FoMoCo changed the 460 mid-model year 1979. There are no before/from certain serial numbers or production dates. The block casting number must be known to get the correct parts.
The flywheel (flexplate) and harmonic balancer are different with the D9TE block vs the D1VE block.
Note: 1971/73 429's have the same D1VE casting number as 460's. The bore is the same, the stroke is different.

if it has thrown a rod, it is worth scrap price, except for the accessories.
If it needs rebuilt, it would depend on the condition. if the crank is still good youre looking at $100. If crank is scored, i'd say go back to scrap price.
I've had good luck buying running ones for the $200-$300 range depending on how complete they were, around here. And I've bought and sold a half dozen different ones.
The ones out of the 70's trucks arent especially notable for rarity or power production or anything else.
