Starting my 76 Highboy DT360 swap
#46
It would be pretty sweet to see an old ford in a ford haha. I still have the engine that I was first planning to put in this high-boy, but I think a 404 John Deere is a little harder to make a tranny fit. But it's not a bad engine considering I got it for free for pulling it, and have a JD531 p-pump and turbo to put on.

Dont overlook a whole truck in your search. I saw one last month for $2500, for the whole truck. It was a 93, aftercooled, and begging for someone to snag it up.

I just bought a 1969 chevy c10 with a....you guessed it, a 1993 dta360 with 57,000 miles. has an allison 545 bolted up to it, bought it running in the truck for 2200$ last week. I plan on putting a 350 with a turbo trans into the c10 and selling it for maybe 1500-2000$ and making most of my money back, then i just bought a 76 f250 with absolutely no rust, and a brand new engine thats never been fired. Plan on selling the brand new gasser and having only 3000-4000$ into the project, pic's will come up around summer when I get space dissemble the truck, and have an adapter plate made for the dt360. Hope to see your highboy running soon MTeichmeier. And I'd like to thank nvreufhp for his website on cheap diesel performance, your info will definitely help in the near future.

That sounds like you are going to be off to a better start than mine asha1997 haha. I finally made it home late last night for spring break, so hopefully I'll be able to get something done. The last couple weeks I've been spending most my time searching for parts without much luck. It seems 79 D60 fronts are either under chevys or gone in my area.

Dude, I doubt it. My truck is going to have 2 stages in its life, the first stage, which will be done by the end of summer is simple. Have the engine in, get around 250hp from pump turning up, and running a high psi hx35, and then have 500 something fpt, stock axles, best clutch I can get for the np435 tranny, run the np205, and just get to where it runs, drives, and can mud and go off roading. Then after I save up another couple thousand dollars, I am going to buy a dana 60 front, a dana 80 rear, convert to all disk brakes, the put an Eaton Fuller 7 speed automatic trans behind the dt360, take the hx35 to an hx40, have injectors re tipped, fuel pump sent in, better springs and get it to where it can rev to 3500 safely, and then have fun with that set up, but all that will cost around 3500-4000$ In the meantime, just having something that runs, drives, and can offroad is all I need because I am still in highschool.

A question I have about the hight of the truck that you can hopefully answer when you work on it again. How high is it with a 1300lbs engine in it? Are you going to need to put f450 leafs on the f250? I can't say. I mainly would like to see where your truck sits now with the engine in it and how much wheel clearance it still has to give me an idea of what suspension I am going to need to keep and eye out for on craigslist and junkyards

Well I've been getting little breaks here and there from farm work, but got the cab lifted off the frame and moved back Monday. And finally today I did my first start with the engine mounted in the frame, and Now i'm thinking i'll have to redesign my rear mounts for sure. So far all i've done to the engine was block off the AFC, but it started up with no problems for it being 40* max in the shop.
Hopefully that link works for you guys. It's not the greatest video ever, but when you work alone you have to make due.

I didn't have any wheel clearance issues with the engine and front fenders on and could have easily still fit 35s without any worries. I'm going to be putting on a lift mainly due to oil pan clearance because I was trying to do the swap without any body lift or a 1" max body lift. So it all really comes down to how you set it up I guess. Sorry I could help you out a little more.

Dang with some work that c10 sound like it could've been a pretty cool rig, but a highboy is where that engine belongs haha.
I didn't really get anything else done last week because we were busy finishing the addition to the shop and pouring concrete that blocked the way into the shop. So i'm back on the parts search until the next time I can make it home.
Here are the top parts on the list:
Fuller FSO-6406a( 6 Speed OD Trans)
Dana 60 Front
Rust Free Cab (Save a lot work but can use the old one)

MTeichmeier Im in the same boat as you. My truck isnt a priority right now, just basically gathering parts for when it is. Today I went to go look at a pole barn with my dad. It's a 32x24 and we bought it for 1700$. It will be a nice little work shop for now. (Going to expand it > )I found a junk yard that has lots of semi trucks, utility trucks, you name it. Seems they will give me around 750$ credit there towards a transmission for my Allison 545 that came on the dt360. Hoping to pick up either a zf6 or an eaton fuller 6 or 5 speed. I bought a zf5 for 150 bucks from a friend, going to use that for now when its ready to be put together, but no permanent. The dude I bought my highboy from sunday was a jack ***, and no rust apparently means "no rust for Michigan". He didn't mention taking a sawsall to the roof and making a "sun roof" and a complete interior means a mangled dash, no glass, no door pannels, no radio, nothing. Just metal...still ticked off about that. But at least that allows me to paint it properly...going to spray the frame black, and then some coats of POR-15. Then the engine goes in. I traded that c10 with no motor or anything for 1500$ credit of labor from my mechanic, mainly for the stuff I can't do (mostly body work). That's where my project is at the moment. A little progress, but about a month ago I didn't have a dt360, or a highboy. lol. I just want to thank you again for this thread because it makes my job a little easier, and I wouldnt ahve bought that chevy if you didnt make this thread.
