Question 2001 Limited Overhead Console Screen & VCR Question

Okay, we are newbies. We just bought a 2001 Limited. Here are pictures of the overhead console w/ screen.

Questions:
Is this screen aftermarket or stock?
Is this console stock?
Has anyone seen this setup before?
Replacement suggestions??

It appears (as far as we can tell so far) that the screen is glitchy (using the VCR which is under the rear passenger seat) and the sound is awful (through the speakers in the vehicle). If anyone has any more info about what we can replace this with, I'd love to know. We don't mind the VCR since our Ford E-150 van had one and as a result we have lots of VHS tapes for the kids, but we'd like to add a DVD (in dash?) and have a nice screen and nice sound.

I installed a boss indash DVD player under the third row with the supplied brackets and run the audio through IR headphones.

Question

Upon more investigation, we found some audio/video outputs right next to the drivers seatbelt. My husband hooked up a dvd to it and the picture on the TV screen was perfect, but no sound. He suspects that the audio needs a Y splitter or something. Since I'm a novice I might be repeating him incorrectly so I'm not sure. Here's the outputs we found:

So, we definitely believe the VCR is bad and needs replaced. Shown here under the second row:

I'm also curious as to what this (below) is connected to & what it controls :

And what this is for "UN Wired"?? in the back cargo area & what it does? :

So, I think we'll keep the console and the screen and see about adding a dvd player (somewhere?) and replace the VCR. So far, we are not getting sound. So, that is the next thing we will work on. If anyone has expertise, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

There should be RCA connectors already behind the VCR for the video and audio if the VCR had worked before. Simply detach them from it and connect them to your DVD player or any other video /audio source.

That control panel below the cigarette lighter plug controls the stock radio. It is also wired for the rear speakers.

That is the same vcr I have in my garage now. I just hooked up the connectors off of it to the DVD player. The black box is for the IR headphones.

Okay, thank you. We do want to keep a VCR. I know it's crazy, but like I said above, we had a Ford E-150 van with VCR in it so we created an entire collection from the thrift store of movies for CHEAP. I'd like to still have VCR and add DVD. We were really thinking in dash DVD to connect. It's just a weird system (in my opinion). OH, and I like the idea of the IR headphones, but I have 5 kids that are 7,6,4,3 and 3 so they don't seem quite old for me to spend money on that yet for each of them. I'd like the sound to go through the main system, but like I said so far, no sound at all or really bad sound. Maybe we'll swap out the VCR and see if it works better.

You can find the headphones cheap on eBay.

Not bad. I'll show my husband that tomorrow and see if that is how he wants to go on this. At least that way, they would either have to watch the movie OR talk, but cannot do both. HMMMM....

Mine that I got from eBay were $20 more then that. And on my trip last week me and the wife listened to the front speakers and the girls had the headphones on. And I didn't hear them complain about not being able to hear.

Now that is a GREAT point. I have a few of those whining "I can't hear" in the back. This would solve all those problems. So, yeah, we might do that.

Just so you know what I bought

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Lincoln...item1e717094ec

Also you might want to find someone who has some already or borrow (buy and return) a pair from Wal-Mart just to make sure the system works.

The system I have in my Ex has the audio going into an RF modulator that is then connected to the antennae input on the head unit. When you want the sound from the VCR to go into the radio, you turn the power on for the RF modulator and tune into a preset frequency on the radio.

Okay, I'll mention this and see if that is the problem when my husband gets home and can look at it.
