This is prolly a 1 page thread at most
Roy, they make a product called a "bedsaver." Google it. There are a few different brands/designs. What very likely happened is you "high hitched" where your pin was actually on top of the jaws. It's not rare at all. This is why I have my jaw on my hitch painted silver and I actually crawl under the front of my 5ver and look over my tailgate every time to make sure I see it closed around my pin.
Roy, that really sucks. Sorry it had to happen but sounds like you got away easier than some.

Yup.......i always crawl in under the nose of the 5er to insert locking pin and inspect jaws closely, and also when backing under the pin, I always back just enough to get the pin aligned, then set weight on the hitch before backing up to the pin.....insert locking pin, inspect jaws, then pull test, THEN raise landing gear. Then check all lights.
I once had a trailer come off with a big truck........it was winter, -20*F, trailer was froze down......I went thru all steps, then had to yank and reef on the trailer to break it loose, drove across the yard and the trailer came loose right in the yard..............chicken chit azzhole boss said it was my fault and charged me with a preventable accident!!!!!!!
But then a few days later, they did put a new fifth wheel on the rig!!
Oh, well........it happened in the yard, and no major damage was done, and no one got hurt.....except maybe my pride!

Well, yeah. That's to be expected. You're a sailor after all. Not a land lubber. I bet if you bought a house boat instead of an RV, all your shenanigans would have been avoided!
