mileage-tell the truth!

I'm just curious what people actually get for mileage with their trucks. I've seen a lot of outrageous claims made for mileage and wanted some real statistics. The mileage some people with the V10 post seems very unrealistic. My 1997 Ford Expedition with the 5.4L V8 only got 15MPG on a good day, and usually around 13-14 MPG average. Some claims I have seen for the V10 are higher than this, and a Super Duty weighs a lot more than my Expy did.

Please only post numbers taken from the pump, not from the overhead computer and use the following format:

1. year/model/configuration of vehicle
2. engine
3. gear ratio (list oversize tires if you have them)
4. % highway and at what speed/% in town
5. typical mileage/best mileage and under what conditions

My truck:
1. 1997 F250, super cab/longbed/4x4
2. 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel
3. 4.10, running BFG 35 12.50 R16.5 All Terrain TA/KO
4. 75% highway @ 70 MPH/25% in town driving
5. 17 MPG/20 MPG @ 55 MPG all flat highway driving

I'm sure if I slowed down my mileage would increase.

mileage-tell the truth!

johnsdiesel,

It seems to me that this post is pretty much aimed at disproving the V10 guys numbers or making a point about the diesel. Otherwise you would have left this part out:

As I know you're aware, this topic has been done to death, and usually only leads to the same old diesel vs. gas debate. Hopefully it won't and we'll have a really valuable thread here.

Like you I'm sure, I'd love to see someone compile all the data that's in previous threads and come up with some definitive numbers, maybe even some fancy graphs. I thought about trying it a while ago during the last round of mileage and gas vs. diesel posts, but it would take me a week to compile all that info.

Maybe FTE should offer a free t-shirt or something to the guy that does it and sets up a database. Monsta could put it in the FAQ.

Waxy

ON EDIT:

1- 2002 F350 SRW CC SB 4X4
2- 6.8L V10
3- 3.73 LS - 285/75-16 BFG A/T KO's
4- 60% city, 40% hwy
5- 13-14 avg on hwy at ~75mph, best 15.6 at 55-60mph
10-12 city, depends on traffic and temperature
6- 29,000 kms
7- Auto

1. 01, F-250, 4X4 ,CC ,SB
2. V10 6.8L Purely stock
3. 3.73:1 LS w/Steltec 265s (31" dia)
4. 85%@ 75mph Hwy / 15 % in town
5. 32000Mile average=13.1mpg calculated by total fuel purchased on receipts from day one.
6. High MPG 17.2 empty and slow (55mph) on flat land in the winter.
7. Low MPG 6.3 Loaded, fast (75mph), uphills in the summer.
8. Daily/weekly computations for typical to and from work trips is 12.7mpg.

Jonsdiesel, hope your not trying to start a gas/oil war.

I have been trolling these forums for several years now and do not Note many "outrageous" milage claimes, tho there are some questionable figures thrown around every now and then.

Seems to me the V10 generally get 12-13 mpg the PSD slightly better under similar conditions at 15-17 mpg and all the V8 owners have ***** envy so they tend to over state their milage!

OK folks that is a joke so climb on if you feel the need

NOPE, but it would put an end to mileage threads, just type a link to the FAQ.

1. year/model/configuration of vehicle
1994 F-350 Super Cab Dually 2 wheel drive 5 spd

2. engine
Powerstroke Diesel with only 348,000 miles on it

3. gear ratio (list oversize tires if you have them)
4.10:1 stock tires

4. % highway and at what speed/% in town
see below

5. typical mileage/best mileage and under what conditions
Driving 15 miles each way to and from work, going maybe max 65 at some intervals, otherwise stop and go I get 16 mpg.

No trailer, just the truck cruise set at 72 mph on the highway I have seen as good as 24 but typically around 21.

With 48' Featherlite enclosed trailer loaded with Bronco, tools, and other stuff going about 70 mph I get 12 to 14 depending on hills. If I am in a hurry, don't use the cruise, I'll get closer to 10.

I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything. The diesel guys are just as guilty as anyone with the mileage numbers. I just wanted to know for my own curiosity.

I don't think this topic has been done to death because a lot of people tend to post the numbers from the computer. Although it's the major topic in the V10 forum, the rest of us don't discuss it quite as often. The Super Duty/Heavy Duty forum should bring all of us together so we can post the information together in one place instead of different threads in different forums. What I really want to see is what kind of difference the truck configuration makes on mileage for all engines, and especially what people with the 5.4 get for mileage. I'm not trying to bash the V10 or justify diesel, I just want real numbers. The V10 example I used was to point out that people claim mileage numbers much higher than my Expy with the 5.4 which I have a hard time believing. This information may prove that the diffenence in mileage between the V10 and 5.4 V8 really is minimal, and these two engines are what I'm really interested in.

FYI, mileage didn't play an important role in my purchase of an Expedition or an F250 with a diesel, I bought what I wanted.

I guess to be thorough I should have asked how many miles you have on the truck and what type of transmission you have.

6. Miles on truck
7. Transmission

My truck:

6. 140,000 miles
7. 5 speed manual

I have to fill up tonight so I will let you know later today or tomorrow morning. I think my number will be fairly high as I have gotten more miles out of this tank (without the light coming on) then I ever have.

Waxy,

I meant:Is another MILEAGE discussion really necessary?

Maybe Ken could put a filter on the board.........anytime "mileage" is mentioned, the guys computer blows up.

I don't remember seeing a mileage thread that covers ALL engines and ALL configurations taken from readings at the pump, not the computer, and put them in the forum that covers people with the 5.4 V8, the 6.8 V10, and the 7.3 Power Stroke. What's the problem with discussing it again? If you don't want to discuss it, don't post on the topic. I don't know why people are so insulted that the topic has come up. My post is designed to be as thorough as possible so that I (and others) can see which configurations get what mileage and why. A lot of people who post mileage never post the configuration of their truck, 4x4 or 4x2, the mileage on the truck, how they drive, etc. This should answer all those questions.

Might not be a bad idea for a seperate forum. Could include discussions, graphs, mods, and other ideas.
