Cali. emission equipped 7.5L light trucks (<140000 GVWR)were OBD-II starting in 1996. Trust me, we have been down this road many times.
Look for an OBD-II connector under the dash. You could also take a look at the VECI label under the hood, it will tell you if the truck is OBD-I or OBD-II

Im thinking of getting one of the Software ones with a cable that plugs into a laptop (USB).
Any recommendations for one that works with a Mac?

Way over in Maine on the other side of the planet the obd2 anything never made it until 97 trucks. I've never seen even an obd2 96 truck.
I still gotta see it to believe it on a 460.
Is it an eec5 computer or is it still eec4 with some sorta interface.

Very tricky to find. I've been looking now for over an hour.
The pc based ode reader and data logger for eec4 seems elusive.
What's your budget. The other thing is you may have issues with a Mac computer.
I have an actron "scantool" (the original) and it data logs and gives realtime data for a bunch of things. But it's old and primitive.
My friend has either the snapon or mac brand code reader and it's badass. It does everything. More stuff then I thought the eec4 was capable of. But it was very pricy.
Please keep us updated on what you find.
You said your truck is a 97. Is it mass air. Is it obd2. Did you look under dash for connector.

It's not that I don't believe anyone when they say this.
But
Can I have pics. Engine bay and ecu sticker showing EEC5 and maybe obd2 port.
Ford has a funny way of saying (or not saying) something is real or not real but very limited quantitys or special built. Like the 2wd fullsize bronco.

I won't be back home for a couple of days so I can't get pics.
I have seen mechanics read the codes from a connector under my dash a few times. That is where I assumed I would connect my equus.
As far as the Mac software... If there are recommended systems for a PC please post as I have partitioned my Mac so that I can also run PC based sw.
Thanks

Geez...JR.....A little skeptic are we?
When I first saw the OBD-II thing with 7.5L Cali. trucks I sort of thought the same thing. When I went to Motorcraftservice.com, selected Quick Guides/ VECI labels, then used the drop downs to select 1996/F-350/7.5L engine/Calibration Code 6-98T-R06 I found a complete listing of the VECI label, vacuum diagram and a parts listing.

I really want one, just to be different.
All my 460s are sd. I've limited the mods to each because of it.
OP
If your truck truly is obd2 like discussed, then the equus should work. eec5 is compatible with that diagnostic reader. Granted there may be some issues with your computer or some codes may not come up due to an early version eec5. Not sure though.
Borrow someone's code reader and see if it works. If so then I'm sure the equus will work.
