Liftgate suggestions?

Every once in a while, I need to carry something in my wife's MKX that is too long to allow the liftgate to close. There isn't any hardware to use to attach a rope or bungy to hold the liftgate down.
Does anyone have a useful tip on how to keep the liftgat down?

My wife's '08 Edge has handles near the bottom inside edge of the lift gate that a bungy cord could be looped around and then the other end can be connected to the latch strike on the bottom.

The use of bungie cords is exceptionally dangerous. May I suggest the use of a strut installed with qucik disconnects that will hold the gate open.
