running lights stay on after i turn off ignition

Hi Guys
I have a new problem. when ever i turn on my lights at nite and then shut off the truck the running lights stay on and the cab lights too. To correct it i turn on the lights start the truck then shut them off then turn off the ignition?? A while back i had no power to the solonoid when i turned on the key so i had a starter button i hooked up to the solonoid to start the truck. it only happened twice so i didnt fix anything. Could this be a bad ignition switch down on the column causing this problem. Truck is a FI - 1988 f350 dually single cab - 460- C6 tranny.

thanks

What do the running lights have to do with the ignition? Every vehicle I've been in can turn the headlights and running lights on with the key off.

Unless you're saying with the light switch pushed all the way off the running lights stay on?

Hi Lead head

Thanks for the reply! Yes i have the light switch pushed in to the off position and turned off. thats whats so baffling about this?? But if i then start the truck and turn the truck off and the running lights then go out with the cab lights also. As far as the ignition switch down on the column i know it powers alot of things. It was just weird that i had a no power situation to the fender mounted solonoid just a couple of weeks ago. I thought perhaps this could be connected in some way.

Does your truck have a headlight delay?? I don't recall ever seeing one of these set ups in one of out trucks though... But then again I have not seen everything YET!!!!!

Our 97 T-bird has this feature, it will delay turning off the headlights for a few seconds to a minute or so depending on where the delay switch is set. This takes place when you turn the key off first. If you turn the headlights off first , then turn off the ignition they go off immediately . It has the regular park light/headlight switch, plus the dimmer rheostat for the dash lights, AND the delay rheostat/switch.. Do you have a separate switch (maybe a slider) near the headlight switch?

I also once had an 84 T-bird with this same set up..

Just for giggles have you waited for a few minutes to see if they go off automatically?

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
well i changed out the ignition switch way down on the column and it didnt fix the problem. If i turn on the lights and then shut them off ,the running lights stay on along with the dash lights. I wish there were a slider switch or timer but not on this truck!!

Perhaps i just need to change the light switch. Any other suggestions??
Subford help!!
Thanks All

On the very very off chance there is a headlight delay, turn off the lights and see if the lights go out on their own. If they do, repeat 3-5 times and see if the time is consistent. Maybe it was an option or a PO swapped it in.

If there doesn't seem to be a delay installed then start with the headlight switch in the dash.

i had the same problem with a 96 f250 , it wasnt the headlight switch or the switch box on the ignition but was the wireharness plug , it had a short in it . I asked the ford parts guy about this and he said it was common in the 96 ford. I hope this info helps.
