5 Screw Auto Hub maintenance

Well I realize it still the middle of summer, but I'm planning on servicing the hub locks for this winter. I don't think they have ever been done. BEFORE anyone says anything, I'm not switching to manual locks. I don't have the money for that. I honestly don't offroad enough to need them. All I'm expecting is some snow this year when I make my commutes between Seattle and Portland. I know to use a light coating of grease, just not sure what kind. I'm also worried about the seal for the cap. I cant seem to find a replacement one if I end up needing one. Any tips? Someones had to have done this at some point....

Just did this, ended up finding a pair in AZ and rebuilt them in the hotel I was staying in. I'll see if I can post pics in the am.

Thanks for the reply Brad. Any specific type from them? I looked on their website and they have quite the selection. Just not sure which one is the correct one.

That would be greatly appreciated.

Also, should I let them soak in anything? Mineral spirits have been recommended on other sites that I have seen...

I have heard of people coating the hub internals with anti-sieze to keep them from locking up in the winter.

I did the teardown in the shower and sprayed them down with purple power. Let them sit for about an hour.(don't soak the end caps... Found out the hard way, had to buy new 4x4 stickers.) then I just cleaned them with q-tips and rags. If I could do this on a business trip, with a pair of pliers, your laughing. Very easy to do. I just sat down with each part watching tv. Hah

Did you fully disassemble them when you cleaned them? And did you grease anything on the inner parts? I'm not sure exactly where I should grease them once they are cleaned.

If your reinstalling them right away then yes, I would pickup new race bearings and ensure the spring isn't worn down. (you can tell if the end of the spring is sharp). So add a little white grease to the spring, and internals. Pretty much packing a whole lot in there. Again I apologize for no pics today just finished a 17 last night. And I'm back at it again, if you have any issues I'll do my best to help. Otherwise straight forward.

Umm... Just looked and for the bearing and seal service kit is 143.99 per side... HELL no... I'll clean what I can and lube what I can. I have been told NOT to pack the lockout with grease...
