Service Manual and IDI and DI 7.3L

Hello-

I am a newbie to this forum and owning a diesel. I have bought (I thought) a non-Powerstroke 1994 7.3 TURBO F-2504x4. It has not arrived yet (being shipped to me) but I have been reading up and preparing for its arrival. I have bought the entire 1994 Ford factory manual set (3 of them).

Here's my problem. I know that in 1994-1/2, Ford moved to the "PowerStroke" 7.3L.

Looking through some of the different factory manuals (3 of them) they seem to have sections on the 7.3L normally aspirated IDI, 7.3L Turbo IDI, and the 7.3L DI (Powerstroke, even though they don't seem to use that name in the portions of the manual that I've read so far).

HOWEVER, when looking through the Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual, in the 7.3L section for ENGINE CONTROLS, they only have the following 2 diesel sections:
7.3L IDI Diesel (pages 27-1 to 27-6)
7.3L DI Turbo Diesel (pages 28-1 to 28-10)

Assuming that the 2nd one, "7.3 DI Turbo Diesel" is really the "Powerstroke" section. where is the section on the engine controls for the 7.3L IDI TURBO diesel?

From my understanding, I thought that Ford put Turbos onto a limited number of IDI engines, giving them better internal parts compared to aftermarket turbo installations.

Do I use the engine control section for 7.3 IDI Diesel?

Thanks,

You're correct that 'DI' = Powerstroke, and 'IDI' = non-Powerstroke.

You want to read sections dealing with IDI only, since nothing else really translates between the two engines.

I'm no expert, but I have a 93 with an aftermarket turbo, and a 94 factory turbo, and there are very few differences (if any) between the two in vacuum and electrical, so you should be fine going with the IDI section, although both are probably similar. DI will always refer to the powerstroke. Do yourself a favor when looking for parts and say that you have a 93. It will eliminate the confusion of the 94 1/2 model year, and with the exception of a A/C high pressure cutoff switch, I have found no difference. I know the Chilton manual chose to just ignore the fact that there was ever an IDI factory turbo! Congratulations on the truck, I hope she's a beauty!

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

Mac.

Thanks Mike-

Hence, I would assume that there are NO extra electronic controls on the 7.3L IDI turbo (over the 7.3L IDI), which is possibly why they didn't put in a separate section for the turbo in the Electronic Controls?

... and thanks, Mac, too.

I was thinking about telling part suppliers that I have a '93 instead of an early '94 and you just confirmed my thoughts along this line.
