My Y block isn't looking too good

Hey guys, it's been awhile, ive been busy with college and working, I just started working on my '54 and finally pulled the motor/trans on it.

I've got to say, sitting without a hood really did wonders on this poor little 239. I think it's not good for anything but scrap. The pistons literally have holes in them from sitting.

(look at the rats nest that fell out of the bell housing)

(craziest starter I've ever seen)

Here is the damage....

Anyone have a cheap Y block for sale? Ha!

Yeah, IMO, that engine would be better off replaced. Check Craigslist. There is a 272 local out of a '56 complete with OD transmission.
And that is what Ford starters looked like for many years. Worked good and lasted a long time.

Well... you'd be buying new pistons anyway, and milling the decks. What you've really lost is the valve train. Probably more economical to do something different, but a good vatting would make that one look completely different.

I would expect the lower end to be trash as well. If it had enough water in it long enough to corrode thru the pistons, I would suspect the crank to have sat in water also. That thing looks like a marine engine that has seen salt water use and stored wet. The 239 makes it more expensive to build anyway.

LOL! That is exactly what I was thinking. After my pondering if someone put acid on the pistons. Water can be very powerful over the years....
I'm one to try to reuse about anything, but that is rough.

Yeah.... Kinda how I feel as well. I could have it bored out, but even the water jackets are full of rust... And that's pretty hard to fix.

I may take the other head off today and see if it's worse.... Poor thing.

I do have a connection to a rebuilt 289.... But I would really rather use a Y block.

WOW!!!!

Thats about as much as I can say about that engine.

Going forward, I guess the question is... do you want to keep the truck Y block or do you want to go more modern with the drive train.

Im sure you know you have many options and those options are only limited by your wallet and or expertise.

Good luck

Well, keep it and look for another one. I'd have one for sale once I swapped mine out, but I'm way too far from you to have it be any sort of a deal even if it was free. Being in Texas you should be able to find one without too much effort.

Keep the old one till you find a replacement, that way if it's missing a piece you have a spare to take parts from. Or you could clean it up and turn into a cool coffee table.

That sucks though, I've never seen a cylinder filled that much before. You could always keep it to fix up when your budget allows it, and use something else in the mean time. Just remember you can only toss it out once.

I want to go with CHEAP. Ha. I can get a rebuilt 289 for about $400.

Hey guys will the 3-speed in the column mate up to a 289?
I can re-use the 3 speed... It's fine.

I removed the 239 from my 55 F-600 and sold it to a really nice guy to rebuild, found a 292 on Craigslist, had it completely rebuilt, balanced and ported.

There are MANY 272/292's out there in radio land!

It will bolt right in and very few people will be able to tell the difference and the performance will be MUCH better!

Here's one! http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/3067534626.html

More: http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/3168232739.html http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/3192583172.html

Lots of engines out there. I would find a cheap one and do a little rebuilding......

Cheers,

Rick

I'm not the Y block expert, but my understanding is the later 292's like the one in the first ad are much improved from the earlier models. They have better heads and are set up to use hydraulic cams/lifters, where the early ones use solid lifters only. I agree that trying to save a 239 Y isn't worth the effort when good 292/312's are readily available. For $500 you get a good engine and a cherry picker. Not a bad deal at all. It'll be cheaper than trying to swap in the 289 by the time you buy/fabricate mounts and adapters.

Um. Nope. No Y-block ever got hydraulic lifters. (the rumors are, someone did it once though)

The block is not drilled (oil) for it and there's not enough room for the larger diameter lifters.....

Besides, hydraulic lifters would be way too quiet!! I would never want a Y-block that didn't go "Clackity-Clack!!

I would get the one with the hydraulic lift. Maybe offer $350 or so.

Not a bad deal at all. It'll be cheaper than trying to swap in the 289 by the time you buy/fabricate mounts and adapters.
Yeah........besides, no 289 ever sounded as good as a Y-block!!

And by the way, look at the block for the casting ID.

For block ID info, go here ====> TECHNICAL

If the guy is not telling fibs or not totally full of BS, the block will have the following ID......

C2AE-C 292 cu. in. V8 1962 cars 62-64 trucks

Having the above info you'll be able to ID the engine.
