Not to bad for 900$, mine was also a "college rig" I bought it my freshman year in great condition. Rust is starting to pick up on mine (paint is bubbling) I plan on attacking it this week when its not raining. Took me a while but I finally got a small lift in mine, just needs tires.
What are your plans for it?

That's looking pretty good, especially for first time body work. Just make sure to keep on sanding before painting. Sand sand and sand, then sand some more with higher grit. I painted my brother truck (Isuzu hombre) and it has some dents and deep scratches. I sanded it quite a bit with the bondo type putty, but you can tell there are some spots where I didn't sand enough. Overall his truck looks excellent compared to what it used to though.
Yours is coming along great though, but you still have a lot of work ahead. By the way, your headlights looks surprisingly clear/not yellow for them being original. I just replaced mine with "crystal" style headlamps that are a little more clear looking. However, if you ever decide you want to clear up your headlights even more, the 3M headlight restoration kit will make your headlights look brand new, and I'm not exaggerating. Just used it on my brothers truck (the hombre) and had enough to do my dad's GMC Yukon. The lights really do look new, but yours are in good enough condition, and there are much more pressing things than lights you have to work on for now!

Sounds like the curse. Its an issue with the TCC (torque convertor clutch) usually, an electrical gremlin. You could always repalce your MLPS (sensor on side of trans where linkage is) some people have fixed it by doing that.
