Stainless Steel Rusting

who knew SS would start get surface rust after only a couple months of driving. pisses me off that the tail-pipe on my truck(the BRAND NEW pipe) is getting pretty good surface rust. the rest of the pipe under the truck is fine. apparently diamond eye's SS exhaust systems have some kind of warranty for rust. well you need to fill out the warranty card within 30 days of purchase for the warranty to be "used", well due to the longer than expected turbo rebuild the exhaust just sat in the box in my garage and 2 months after i got the exhaust my dad and i are putting it on and he asked if i knew there was a warranty card to fill out.

any ideas on how to clean it up and prevent it from getting worse?

cheaper grades of SS rust.... you can use some steel wool to clean it off, then you need to paint it.

real good stainless steel a magnet wont stick to it and it wont rust,

that low grade SS you got will rust and a magnet will stick.

Just looked up that system. Its T409L. T409L will surface rust, fast, but it will never fully rust through..

its the SS grade....

I believe it is illegal to make it mandatory to fill out a warranty card to activate a warranty, unless of course you signed something, which I doubt you did since you didn't even fill out the warranty card! LOL. Might be worth looking into. but NMB is right. The level of iron in a low grade stainless will only cause surface rust. Nothing to worry about. They do make a high grade magnetic stainless, but im pretty sure they don't use it on exhaust pipe!

i sprayed some wd-40 on the rust and took a steel wool pad and scrubbed it some. rust came off pretty easy but there is pitting in the pipe already.

Describe eventually.... because most metals will eventually have holes in them from rust, corrosion, ect.

It would take at least 8-10yrs of that raw 409 stainless to rust out.

Stainless Steel - Grade 409

Pypes Performance Exhaust - Home Page

Frequently Asked Questions - Support »

quoted from the above link....

What is the difference between grades of stainless steel (304, 321, 409…..?)

Without getting into the specifics of metallurgical properties, 409 is what is typically used on OEM applications. It has fair corrosion resistance, is magnetic due to the high metallic content, but is a less expensive material than 304. 409 is not an ideal material for a performance/restoration exhaust system because it will turn color (brownish/rust) from being exposed to the atmosphere without ever being run. For OEM’s who never care what the exhaust system looks like, it is a decent material that will last long enough to get past the warranty period. 304 stainless steel has much better corrosion resistance and a lower metallic content than 409. 304 will not turn color from sitting exposed to the atmosphere, and will only discolor slightly from getting extremely hot. The best thing about 304 is that you can maintain it with a scotch bright pad if you ever spill oil on it or have it discolor. Stainless Works only uses Everlast 304 stainless steel, which is a premium mil spec grade of stainless steel that is slightly more expensive than standard stainless steel, but is processed much more closely and is more consistent.

Maybe you should of asked around before jumping the gun. I would of told you.

I have the 304 kit on mine, never painted it and it has no surface rust.
