The term L- head stems from having the valves on the same side of the block. F-head, as in the second generation Jeep four cylinder, has the exhaust valve in the block, but intake in the head.

The Y-block term referred to the deep skirting of the block. Compared to V-blocks, which had the bottom of the block end mid-line with the crank, the Y-block extended past the crank.

HA! I'm hosting a swap meet here! LOL

I will say Thanks to Jolly Joe Roger for the links tho, I'm sure they will all come in handy.

I will inspect the heads better today and report back. First order of business is to take out the nasty bench seat that was put in there and toss it to the curb... It's from an old Buick or monte carlo or something... Making my garage smell really bad...

OK, since you have a 49, I did not post the link to Mid Fifty, because most of their stuff is for... you guessed it... later trucks (F100s). But some of the products there will work on your truck. Their sister company is Classic Haulers (that link was in the first post), and they supply stuff for our trucks. Mid Fifty is: Mid Fifty F-100 Parts - Home

The Classic Haulers and Mid Fifty sites are helpful to us rookies. They have detailed explanations of the items in a lot of cases. They will talk to you on the phone, and they know more about these trucks than I do. Let me rephrase that, since everyone knows more about these trucks than I do. They are very knowledgeable. And if they happen to sell something the quality of which is questionable, they'll list it in the explanation. Yes, honesty! It's cheaper than their other selections for a reason. And they ship Tootsie Rolls with their parts. That right there hooked me. I have an ongoing list of the things I still need to buy (not including body work and paint). The list of items I'll be buying from Classic Haulers currently totals $1,000 not including shipping... Actually, before I get around to spending that money I don't have, I expect the list will grow. It certainly never seems to get smaller.

Wish I had one of those Tootsie Rolls right now...

And in case I didn't already... Welcome to FTE!

Thanks, but someday (way into the future) all that color in the cab will be changing to match whatever color I (finally) decide to paint the truck. But I may leave the "not stock" chrome on the glove box door because I like it. And I even thought about painting the truck some sort of "brown" so I could leave the interior alone.

And thanks for reading my looooonnnnngggg build thread. I'm getting really close to driving her down the street, and the suspense is killing me.

Granted, I got VERY lucky with this truck, and have FAR less to do than most folks getting a 60+ year old truck. I still want to drive it NOW!!! But it's not safe yet.

We want pics of your truck. No pics, you don't really have one...

That is a 52- 53 Mercury carb. The heads of course are Mercs. It would be worth pulling the oil pan and checking the crank regardless of what engine direction your going.
This is what a Ford pickup/truck carburetor should look like. This has the hand throttle.

Thanks for the reference. I will eventually have to pull the pan anyway, so when i do, I'll report back.

I saw a couple "running" merc flatheads going from 1500 to 2000. Does that seem to be the going rate?

I will sandblast my new old truck in September. Alot of rust coming through and a fair bit of putty found in the usual places.. Hope for the best when this thing gets "unveiled"

^^^^ I'd leave it as is. They're always easy and fast to take apart, but slower and harder to put back together, including expensive!
