gauges not start

I have a 2003 ford escape and sometime when you turn key to start engine you hear a click and all the gauges go all the way over and engine will not do anythings. Turn key back to off and try again and engine will start and all the gauges work normal. Do anyone have any ideas of what my problem may be. Thank
