Fuel pump not engaging

Its a 94 Ranger, 3.0 auto, x-cab, 4x2, 180K miles. It was having a problem of not starting, I put a new fuel pump and relay in it a month ago, and haven't had any problems at all with it until today. When I turn the key, it will crank real strong but won't fire up at all. I don't hear the fuel pump kick in, and the check engine light doesn't come on either when I turn the key to the "run" position. All other warning lights come on though. Today I pulled the relay, and jumped it, and the fuel pump kicked in. My best guess is that it must be an ignition or wiring problem. Can anybody give me some tips, or places to look or what needs to be replaced??

When you said you jumped the relay, I assume you mean you pulled it out and jumped power directly to the fuel pump. Is this correct? If it is, I would check out the relay. I know that it is relatively new, but it could not hurt to have it tested. If you jumped power to the relay and then the pump kicked on, then I would check the fuse for the fuel pump or the wiring between the fuse and the relay. Hope this helps you. Good luck.

The key here is the check engine light not being on. The eec power relay supplys power to the EEC which will ground the fuel pump relay and allow power to flow to the pump. Check all fuses and grounds. Pay attention to the ground near the neg.bat. cable as it is for the computer. Get your check engne light back on and the rest will probably come back with it.

Thanks for the tips, this problem would intermintently show up, but it would always eventually engage. I have learned to listen for the fuel pump and for the check engine light to come on before I crank it over. When I got the new relay for the fuel pump, I saved it because that didn't seem to make it any better, so I replacd the EEC relay with the original fuel pump relay, and now it fires right up. I am still a little skeptical about it, but I think that it finally fixed.

Many thanks too all...
Jeff
