Yes, at TDC on the compression stroke of the number 1 cyl the rotor should point to the number 1 plug wire position on the cap.

Which should point to the drivers side rear cylinder and the vacuum advance should be close to straight ahead at least on a 335 series engine anyway.

I know that would make sense to me also, but my cap was labeled with number one pointing to the drivers side rear cylinder? So I did a little research and came up with this. Crap link won't work! I'll try again.

Disregard firing order, but everything else is the same. This is 289/302. Rotor towards #1 PLUG WIRE AS POSTED.

 

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood your question. Yes, that sounds correct.

Figuratively speaking it doesn't matter where you have the rotor pointing, as long as the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap it is good to go.
