Only I can make such a mess... help!

Hutch mod - good
Fuel pump prefilter - disater.

Nutshell mode engaged:
  • 3/8 fuel filter (Wix 33003) flows nice, but hose doesn't seal well on the 5/16 SS fuel line after the tank, it introduced air if I jiggle the filter.
  • 5/16 fuel filter (Wix 33001) orifice too small - can't keep up with pump demand and is making pump cavitate (bad noise).
  • No Wix 33007 available in my berg.
Who's got posession of the magic wand this week? I need a little wave here.

Sorry, you are having trouble Rich. IIRC the 33003 isn't diesel rated. Sorry no magic wand to wave from here for you.

I have the 33007 and all connections were double clamped 180* from each other, no issues with air intrusion due to improperly sealed hoses.

If you've got a Mercedes-Benz dealership in town see if they have the primary filter for a 1982 300D on the shelf. That year isn't requisite, it is just comfortably in the middle of the range. Same type of filter as the 33007 and has 5/16" ends.

I think Al's got it. Double clamping the lines is key.

I like to use Fuel Injection clamps, they are a constant velocity type clamp. I also try to flair the end of the ss line with a brake line flair tool, it is very hard to flair ss but it can be done, you won't get much flair at all but it only takes a tiny bit.

The 33007 is a mercedes filter, for a 190D.

The filter for the 300D is 33006 has a 90 angle on top.

I also use them on my diesel datsun 720.
I have owned several mercedes. That is how i know about the filters.

I took some time and investigated 33003 and 33001. Neither is rated for diesel (gas only). That is the reason for the cavitation (fuel starvation), not the orifice size. Gasoline only filters starve diesels.

If you still cannot find a diesel rated filter, PM me (or a couple of us). The filters will be in the mail. I have spares in my glove box now.

Thanks, good to know, didn't realize M-B used a straight on any models. My benzes all used the 90 so I figured he could use a 90 filter in a straight-thru application like I do on my lawn mower.

Well... I've researched the numbers and I've raided every auto parts store within range. Zip. Nada. Nobody prefilters diesel around here, I guess. I will be in Seattle tomorrow, so I'll pick up a few while I'm there. It's just a bummer I work 12 hours, come home and do a Hutch/Harpoon mod with zero issues - then fight a $5 item in 100 degree heat. Out of all the work/expense on my truck, this dink got me contemplating kicking Stinky to the curb - but I'm sure it's just the long hours and the heat.

I really appreciate everybody stepping up the way they have! I was hoping somebody might know a gimmic to get that oversized hose to work, but it ended up the "O" place sold me a potato cocktail to begin with.

33006 and 33007 work with diesel, and the 33972 is a larger clear filter housing. I'll get the 33972 - I think I'm going to opt out of the complex fuel/water separator prefilter.

Thanks again to everybody!

Rich

I wouldn't abandon the fuel/water separator, but I would move it to after the pump. It won't hurt the pump any to pump a little water.
