How horrible is your 302 on gas?

I am currently driving a 1995 F.150 with a 302 and 186,703 miles on it. I decided to finally figure out how many miles per gallon it gets and calculated it up. It gets 7mpg, so I was wondering what is it suppose to get on average and any tips on cheap ways to get it up. I think I`m gonna change plugs in it soon and it always smells a little rich, so maybe it also needs a O2 sensor?

lot of it depends on what gear ratio you have, Check your sensors TP, and 02 are reletively cheap i would suggests replacing factory air box with a aftermarket of your choosing

Back when I had it my '89 F150 SCLB 4x4 302/AOD/3.55ls got about 16. If it's getting 7 there's a problem.

Unless the truck is used for snowplowing or something like that it should get low teens city and mid to high teens highway.

My '95 f150 2wd/302/automatic with 3.31 gears would get a solid 16-17 mpg around town if you babied it along real easy. No flogging it. Just like grandpa. Get fancy on the pedal and it would get 14-15 in town. That with 90K miles on the ticker.

My truck gets 15 all day long with 4.10s, but all my friends say I drive like a grandpa. Not even 460s should get those numbers

Last time I took my 89 for a decent highway trip, it was in the winter time, the truck is a 2 wheel drive, 5 speed truck, with 3.08 gears and it got 21mpg, hand calculated.

One of many reasons why the 302 is the perfect (for me and my uses) engine in my spare truck!

On my 92 4x4 w/3:55's , I get 11 - 12 mpg around town. About 14 -15 mpg highway with a tail wind

Our trucks are about as aerodynamic as a brick , But I still think they are one of the best lookin Generation F150's IMO.

Mine averages 14-15 city highway mix.

I'd definitely try replacing the O2 sensor.

Maybe it has partially clogged cats.

When was the last time it had a complete tune up and fresh fluids and filters?
