The crossiver pipe is supposed to be good for scavenging, but I always thought it made exhaust systems sound goofy. Makes a weird pushing sound. Anyway, hard to put an x or y pipe in on a 4x4. Have to almost make a mini one under the passenger side if you were to route it in the same fashion as stock. Also, flowmaster makes a good product, but its so overpriced. Summit racing street and strip mufflers sound identical to the flowmaster 40. And those sound pretty killer behind the big block
I'm beginning to think that going with the single pipe would be the best option, with an exit behind the passengers side tire. Is there a setup I can do myself without having to take it to a muffler shop? I have no welding skills so it's bracketology for me.
Look at the pipe I mentioned.
I welded a hanger but you could use one that clamps on.
You may need a hacksaw, Sawzall or angle grinder to make some cuts.
I had to trim about 2" off the length at the forward end where it fit to my muffler.
I did an ultra flo X stainless muffler (cross over in muffler) and kept it true duel down the passenger side dumped both in front of the rear wheel like a lighting. Its a hi flow straight through muffler.... so it adds sound. No drone, yet, not quiet if you got it to the boards. Good performance tone. Its twin in/out with 2.25 2.5 or 3 inch openings. All are 3 " internals. Not cheap at 120 for it alone but in stainless its a one time buy.
Anyone run a Flowmaster 40 Series muffler on their truck? I'm looking at having my exhaust done with this muffler and a single pipe exiting behind the rear passengers tire.

I've heard hundreds of them, they have a nice good rumble without annoying drone or too loud.
I've got a 2wd 1997 f250 crew cab w/ the 460. I removed the cat, ran 3 pipe to a 3" center in center out flowmaster 50 series muffler then ran a 3" tailpipe out the the side behind the rear wheels. It sounds good and it isn't annoyingly loud in the cab. Sounds really good under a load.
I ran a 50 series flowmaster behind my 351w for years. 3" single exit system out after the tire. Sounded mean as hell. I'm now running 2 Summit Racing Street and Strip mufflers that are identical to the flowmaster 40 series and it sounds really good. Nobody in town will complain, and I can really let er scream on the highway.
You should look into the flowmaster kit part number 17211. I found them on eBay for $270 shipped. It's a 3" system with the big block series muffler.
I actually considered that kit but I was worried the muffler would be too loud. I want a little throatyness sound out of it but nothing like what I have now. I live in Alaska too so shipping would be a bit more for me as well.
i put a 44 flowmaster on my fathers 96 f250 with the 5.8 after his cat fell off. it now has from the manifolds a y pipe and the muffler and then i bent new 3 inch pipe all the way back. its all stock locations and is suprisingly quiet but very distinct.
Be careful with "true" duals, you need a crossover pipe in there somewhere for best results.
Uh, what? I might be missing something obvious, but with true duals you wouldn't have a Y pipe and both sides would come off the headers relatively straight back. So where's the crossover?

I would think it would be a quieter muffler than the 50 series I have since the case is bigger.
You could check with amazon for your parts too. Their shipping doesn't change for Alaska I think.
Are you leaving the cat? That would make it quieter as well.

He said crossover, not Y-pipe lol. Big difference. A crossover pipe; AKA x-pipe; ties both sides of your true duals together, then goes back into true duals. It tones down the exhaust a bit and has a scavenging effect. You wouldnt HAVE to have one to make true duals work, but if ya got the extra cash to spend, its well worth it
