second cat removal

Hello, i have a 95 f150 extended cab, eddie bauer, 4x4 ,302, 285 tires. My question is this what happens if i remove the second cat? I an trying to get a better sound from the exhaust and have been told that the cat is making that impossible. There is no o2 sensor down stream if the second cat, so I'm thinking the computer will never know. Also how will that effect power? With the bigger tires it is kinda sluggish off the line. Thanks

does the 2nd cat have an 02 sensor? and depending on the state you live in it may be "illegal" to remove the cat. Now what we have done on a few is to take a pipe and smash it throught the cat to bust out all the packing. Than it appeaers to be a cat with out the restriction. Power wise opening up the exhaust on the 302 without headers you are looking at about 5hp maybe more depending on how packed the cat is. But please put on a flowmaster or equivelant exhaust and not glass packs.

My state restrictions is not a problem. There is no o2 after the second cat, there is one in the piping between the first and the second but that won't be disturbed. Won't i have to remove the cat body to gut it? How will i get all the broken catalyst pieces out. Also, 5 hp gain or lose.

No cut the pipe behind the cat and use a piece of piping/conduit or something like that and hit it through the cat with a hammer. Than when its all the way through start the truck and rev the hell out of it to blow all the pieces out. than weld the exhaust back. Its probably a gain.

I've done the exact thing your thinking bout.. I have a 96' f150 XLT single cab 302.. I cut the muffler off first.. Try that because they sound great just by doing that... After I cut off the second "big" cat, once it was off I took a pipe and chiseled the ceramic material out of it so it was basically a straight pipe and it sounds great!! You can also hollow out the 2nd cat and just put a piece of pipe straight thru it then it's a legit straight pipe with just the case around it... Either way with no muffler or a gutted cat and no muffler it still sounds good.. But we dyno'd my truck before and after and I gained 9 hp and I also removed some excess weight in the back end underneath the trck which gave me another 7hp.. That's an old trick for ever 100 pounds you remove it's about 10-13 hp.. But the single best thing you can do fore cheap is get some headers or new exhaust manifolds and get new pipes throughout the entire exhaust b/c the y pipe and manifolds are very very restrictive
