Adding intermittent wipers to a non-intermittent truck

My no-frills '91 has just the basic on/off wipers and I'd like to add the intermittent feature using factory parts, preferably junkyard sourced. I've read about the in-line relay located just behind the switch - is that all that's needed along with the switch itself? What about the controller that's located behind the glovebox? Is that different for the intermittent wiper option?

What about the year range? Did anything change over the '87 - '96 life-span or can any truck be a donor?

Any details appreciated...

87 to 91 switch and delay module are all you need. the module will be in the wiring connected to the switch mounted to the dash behind the switch with 1 or 2 screws.

Great, that sounds easy enough, assuming I find one of course. Do the '92 - '96 vehicles use an entirely different setup that's not reasonably transferable? Nowadays, these trucks are more common in the junkyard than the earlier ones, hence the question.

I can't help you with that question in particular but from my experience most of these trucks had complete wiring harnesses whether you had the option or not. Hell I added cruise control for 24 dollars and an hour in labor (both pulling the pparts at the JY and installing them in mine).

'92 to '96 is a totally different setup. The wiper/washer switches are part of the turn signal/high beam stalk.

Got it. Nix that idea and stick to '87 - '91.

And yea, I suppose I could buy new, but where's the fun in that!?

Went junkyarding yesterday and examined a bunch of '87 - '91 trucks. Is this delay module located directly behind the switch? Is there typically anything different imprinted on the bezel to indicate the intermittent function is present?

I saw nothing that looked like a module in the harness behind the switch on any of the trucks.

Was this a fairly rare option?

You'll just have to turn the switch to see if it has intermittent function. Instead of 3 positions (Off, Lo, Hi), you'll have 3 positions plus a sweep: Off, sweep/intermittent, Lo, Hi.

switch with module attached.

and to determine if the switch is delay or not,
turn to the right for delay, the other way for low-high.
if it if it is non delay it will only turn one way for off-low-high.

Right, Tom--I had forgotten the order. Been a while since I got rid of my '90 F150.

no problem Jason. your comment had me thinking and made me go out and check the 88.
of course, the switch in it is bad , so i had to dig up that setup i picked up years ago to put in the 65 falcon.

if i ever get around to finishing it.

The intermittent switch I liked the most was in my '87 Mercury Lynx (my first 4-wheeled vehicle). It was on the turn-signal stalk, and there were 4 positions--off, intermittent, lo, hi. Then there was a separate dial on that stalk that adjusted the intermittent delay, with a little indicator window so that you could see roughly where it was set, even with the wipers off.

Thanks for the pic. I presume the "E7TF..." box is the delay module, yes? As close to the switch as it is, it should be easy enough to find (if the vehicle is so equipped).
