I have an 88 2.3, 5 speed, 2wd extended cab ranger. Recently the composit rubber drive shaft coupler started to fail. Anyone know / have a replacement unit? I have been on line & through all the major junk yards in my area.

Anyone been through through a drive shaft modification / rebuild to get around this problem?

ANy help is appreciated.

 

Have you checked with a Ford dealer to get the part number at least? If the folks in the parts dept. are of the helpful variety, they may tell you where you can get a replacement part.

 

I tried 2 different dealers & got the same story "..production stopped in 1999 & they can't get a replacement". I have been to ~ a dozen junk yards here in central PA with no luck.

You'll need to go to a driveline repair shop where they can replace or build drive shaft components. There should be a shop in your area or closer to one of the larger cities around you. Check your phone book or on your Iphone. Some of the auto service shops in your area may know of one that is good. Ask around at the parts stores too.

 

I have not been able to locate one for your Ranger, but after much searching on the web have found that the coupling is very common with foreign cars, especially Land Rover and BMW. They are referred to as Guibo or Rotoflex couplings. Even Corvette uses them on axle shafts. The coupler is designed to reduce vibration but can cause vibration if they begin to fail. An alternative is to replace the coupler with u-joints as Rangerman Stan has suggested.
