on a side note, I have been doing some experimenting since I have heard some crazy rumors about the bad things about Bio.....

first I mixed a batch of B-5 up to see if there is any separation after it sits for a while, Been 2 weeks still looks like it did when I mixed it, the same goes for B-20 and B-50 samples I made.

I then took some straight Bio (B-100) put about 2 teaspoons of water in it, shook it for a couple of minutes and it turned slightly milky, I let it sit over night and what do you know it separated!!!!

I have been Burning B-15 to B-20 all summer and my mixed mileage has been 16.8-17.7 mpg hand calc'd .

If you have the tools and time, measure the amount of water you mix with bio and after it separates, can you reverse measure to see exactly how much it separates.

Hahaha, I don't have the scientific means to pull that off !

StanleyZ, Whenever we camp we don't usually see any other truck like ours, the 2009. They are new, the ones that can burn up to B20. I did really notice this the last time we were out 2 months ago and just last month also.

We are planning on towing again late September down to the Smokies. Last time we were there, which was awhile ago, there was some biodiesel, but I was still able to get ULSD. Will be interesting to see what we find this time.

Here is one response my husband got just today at work, he also emailed the National Biodiesel Board: "Thanks for writing.

Ford Motor Company has supported the use of biodiesel blends in its diesel vehicles for a number of years. All Ford diesel products built up to model year 2010 are approved for use with up to 5 percent biodiesel fuel blends (B5), and many fleets and consumers in the U.S. have operated their Ford trucks successfully on up to B20 biodiesel blends for years. Ford Motor Company recognizes the benefits that are associated with the expanded use of high quality biodiesel fuel blends and they have fully approved their complete line of 2011 and forward model Ford Super Duty diesel trucks (F250 – F750) for B20 biodiesel blends.

It is important to note that prior to the 2011 model year, Ford diesel vehicles were/are still capable of operating on high quality B20 or higher biodiesel blends, as long as the user is careful to use only biodiesel meeting the ASTM D6751/ASTM D7467 specifications and follow proper vehicle maintenance procedures, especially during cold weather operation. (The modifications that Ford made to 2011 engines to approve them for B20 simply optimized the engines for B20 use). The point to note is that Ford will only support up to B5 under warranty on their diesel models prior to 2011, whereas they will fully support up to B20 under warranty from 2011 and forward.

When biodiesel is first used, it cleans out the dirt and sediment that is currently in the fuel system. Putting biodiesel blends into a relatively clean fuel system should not present any problems. However, if the fuel system is dirty, you may plug a fuel filter when the biodiesel begins to clean the system. When the system has been cleaned out a person should be able to change the fuel filter on a regular preventative maintenance schedule.

The link below to the retail fueling site may assist you in finding stations which dispense B5.

Hey hey hey.... I didn't hesitate to fill up when I saw the B20 sticker. The nearest bio supplier is 45 minutes from me or I'd be using it more.

I thought it interesting that the article quoted the Biodiesel Board as a source for what manufacturers say about bio. That's the same group I'm working with who, until I told them last week had no idea that Ford restricted the 6.4L to B5 or less. Given a choice between what this article or the Bio Board says versus the Ford owners manual, I go with the Ford manual.

Bottom line here for me boils down to two things.

bio has less energy which equals poorer fuel ecomony.

bio is hard on the emissions for this (6.4) motor.

bio is suspect when it comes to quality.

I have run some of it with no ill effects other than excessive regens and poor mpgs.

Now how to cope with our issue of higher bio percentages in our fuel is still out.
Now for those of you that are talking about testing your Bio for water and impurities, this is what I use and you can buy it fron Northern Tool.....

Fleet Biodiesel Diesel and Biodiesel Fuel Test Kit — Water and Visual Clarity, 12 Tests, Model# FT-0100 | Quality Test Kits| Northern Tool + Equipment}

You will be appauled at what you will see in your test. This is one reason why I do not care for bio at this time. After testing bio at 3 different high volume retailers, (Pilot, TA and Loves) I am now changing filters every 5k and have been the last 15k in miles..........

My buddy just called me asking why his truck is running like crap and going through regen so much more. I asked where he filled up last and he said it was the location where I took the 20% pic. Of course his is bone stock.
