Potato, Potato, Potato.....

The teen jumping into the pool thread, actually only half way into the pool, made me remember another foolish thing someone did that I saw on Dateline the other night.

Seems a young man went blind after getting hit in the face by a potato shot from a potato gun. I only saw the tail end of the program so I don't know who pulled the trigger. But no matter, because this poor soul was looking down the barrel of the gun! Looking down the barrel of a loaded gun is just asking for it!

I feel sorry for the guy but come on. No common sense led to this tragic accident. Of course Dateline was portraying this guy as a victim.

Now there is an effort to get potato guns banned. FIGURES!

It's worse than you think, they had the potatoe gun loaded with a frog, and it was the high velocity frog that blinded him.

It figures, everyone knows better than to look into the barrel of a frog gun.

I think we should outlaw frogs and swimming pools. He have to put a stop to this! If this happened to my child, I'd get a good toad and sue the skin off that frog's parents. Surely someone else is to blame for this.

DALLAS -- A teenager has lost his sight after being struck in the face with a frog, shot from a so-called "potato gun."
It's a shame the kid is now blinded for life. It's also a shame that his parents never instructed him in basic firearms safety.

Basic firearms safety??
A good lesson in common sense would have averted disaster in this situation.
This also goes to show that life is dangerous, and we NEED government legislation to protect us. Thank GOD for our lawmakers and law enforcement personnel who are so diligent in making this world a more homogenous, safe place for everybody. We shouldn't be allowed to take risks...it's too much of a liability to our benevolent insurance monarchies.

The parents of this guy and the cliff diver's folks will be the ones crying themselves to sleep at night. I hope they have Christ in their lives, it's going to be tough. It's a shame.

It's my opinion that firearm safety instruction has very little to do with these type of accidents. Firearm safety is plain and simply common sense. Do you really need to take a class to know the bullit (or frog) comes out the end of the barrel?

Yes, it is a shame that he is blinded for life. Yes, accidents happen. I don't have any sympathy though. Dumb is dumb. It takes a real genius to look down the barrel of a loaded gun.

True, common sense is a large part of any safety training.

Sometimes though, it needs to be pointed out.

And to top it all off, PETA, or one of those other overbearing "don't do this" organizations will probably sue the family for killing the poor frog, and have legislation passed to prevent anybody else from shooting frogs out of potato guns.

This has got to be one of the most obsurd but amusing threads yet :-) You just can miss with potatoe gun and frog humor.

Now, what's Mom gonna say "Be careful, you could put an eye out with that". Now, this applies to just about anything dull or amphibious :-)

Wow, I didn't know he loaded the potato gun with a frog. Like I said, I only seen the tail end of the program. I wonder, did the show ask the question of why they were loading the gun with a frog? Was it in their plan to figure the splat factor from a frog hitting the side of a tree or see how far a frog could fly? How many frogs did they launch out of the barrel that day? Did they all think it was funny? Not to sound like the kid in anyway derserved this, but this kind of behavior needs to be put in the spotlight. The potato gun did not cause this.

According to the article, the kid who was blinded didn't even own the potato gun. I don't know who shown the least common sense in this one. The kid who looked down the barrel of a gun that had just misfired, or the kid who let him do it.

Well the only good, if you want to look at it that way, is the fact that he was hit in the face with a mushy frog instead of a hard potato. A potato would probably have killed him.
