EFI to Carb

Hey guys. I got an offer on a good used set of re-worked heads for my 460. Its got the bigger valves and the whole 9 yards. The guy says I can buy these heads and an intake for "4". Not sure if its $400 or $4000... $400 seems low and $4000 seems high. Anyways, once I find that out, how hard is it to convert to a carbureted engine? Im afraid its gonna be harder than bolting on my new stuff and going... I read you have to get a standalone system for the tranny. I looked up some and theyre runnin anywhere from $450-$1000. Seems kinda steep!! Is this the case? And what other things will I have to change to make this set-up work?

400 sounds about right...But stay with the EFI, you can find a set of EFI heads for less than the cost of converting to a carb.

-Just a quick search on summit racing, found a set of Ford Racing 460 heads for ~$980. And thats about as top of the line as you'll get.

DO NOT CONVERT TO CARB!!!! The truck needs EFI. Its designed to be that way. Take it out and your already bad mileage will get worse. And in almost all cases its illegal to switch it to a carb from the EFI.

Im not worried about the legaility of it. They dont check that stuff around here lol.

And I plan on getting worse mileage going from 250 horses to 400. They make LS1s and 5.7L Hemis carbureted, so why would a 460 be different?

I would like to see just one LS or Hemi carbed.

Stick with the EFI and NOT complicate things

Alright, if you want to go cobble your truck into something that's less efficient and essentially make it worse go for it. Its your truck. Enjoy the expensive lesson....

If I were going to get rid of the factoty EFI it wouldn't be for a carb, it would be for an aftermarket EFI system. Several manufacturers make them, Edelbrock, Holley, MSD, FAST. All of the newer aftermarket EFI systems use stand alone hand held programmers instead of laptops, they are fully customizable, so if you change something on the engine you can easily upgrade engine tune.

Another reason to stick with efi over carb is cold start driveabaility. With efi when it is cold out you get in start and drive, no waiting for for the engine to warm up like with a carb.

Even Nascar has seen the benefits af EFI and switched over. And they banned the HEmi in NAscar back in the late 60's

Carbed LS

Carbed 5.7 Hemi

I wouldnt mind doin that standalone EFI system but those are OUTRAGEOUS priced. I thought our stock EFIs were problematic once you started messin with performance modifications?

The stock system isn't necessarily problematic, but the system has its limits

I kinda said that wrong lol. I meant the computer is problematic. As in itll start throwin codes like crazy after anything more than an intake and exhaust

Ohh. Yeah the speed density system is pretty much preset. You could swap to mass air and have all the tunability you want though. I know for a fact that there were some mass air 460s

How hard is it to find a mass air 460 though?
