C series info
the wiring diagram and shop/parts manual & catalog are available on CD, but they require alot of time digging thru them. i have looked numerous times for the tranny oil fill plug, it's covered over by grease i suppose, but the parts catalog did not help me. i had trouble with clearance and marker lights. [is there a difference? i have a dry van on my chassis. i belive the trailer clearance lights were wirred to the parking lights, not the clearance light switch, or was possible rewired as a rmedy??[40 y.o.] i spent alot of time pouring over the wiring diag.; and i was an electronic technician b4 retirement. i spent 2-5 hours a day on my truck, but it got us to our first competion of the season!

OK, this is not out of the factory manual or brochure, but here are some differences.
C550--GVWR probably 12000-16000 max.
C700--GVWR possibly as high as 25000, maybe more.
Engines varied by year, starting with Y blocks, then FTs and Superduty motors in the larger trucks. Not sure the C700 would get a Superduty motor, but a C550 would not.
Axles, frame, brakes, tires--all bigger or heavier on the 700.

1981 C700
I bought a 20' box truck to convert to a vac truck. It went nicely and I have pics in my album, but can't figure out what setting needs to be changed to post pics in a post.
As far as I know I have a 370 with 5-speed and two speed axle. Torque up the wazoo, but it sure does not go anywhere fast.
Yesterday I was experiencing some vapor locking. Need to look into an electric fuel pump I guess.

I have scanned and posted several original brochures which will give you the factory information on GVW, GVCR and other ratings.
This is where you will find this kind of detailed information. Further details right down to the thickness of the various body panels can be found in the dealer information booklets, one of which covering the 1973 models is currently scanned and posted.
The search function is your friend, I am a specifications type person, I like knowing the detail differences in these trucks as to standards and options as such. Of course I can't know everything and learn everyday, but for now, I have concentrated on learning as much and collecting as much factory information on Ford's C series from 1957 to 1990.
Many thanks to NumberDummy for helping me read thru Fords rather cryptic at times parts manuals!

Of course when comparing completely stock base models, yes, the higher the model number, the heavier rating. Which is why each individual truck needs to be looked at as a one off, and exactly how that truck was spec'd out needs to be determined.

C series are Cabovers, F series are just like large pickups in that they use the same type of cab.
Sounds like you are looking at a F700
I have no idea of price, how is the condition? Rusty? Straight? Low miles? What king of drivetrain, gas, diesel, trans type etc. Hydraulics, type, PTO or electric? Air gate or manual, how is the dump box? Is the floor rusted out or good? you get the idea. There are just so many variations of how a 20,30 or 40 year old truck could be in condition wise as well as how it was originally specked out.
I am assuming that since you made mention that it is made to haul gravel, it has a regular dump box, or rock box and is not just a flatbed with sides?
Post what you find out and I am sure many will give you a idea.
