measuring rear main seal crush
Hey guys I am in the middle of doing some work on my 89 460 motor while its out of the truck. I am going to change the rear main seal in the morning and I was wondering how to measure the crush. I have read about how important it is, but can't seem to understand how its measured.
thanks!

It's a two piece seal. It does have crush. The two halves were made too long from the factory, so when the bearing cap is installed, a gap opens in the seal.
To measure it, put one half in the engine. Make one end of the seal perfectly flush with the surface, and measure how much the other end is protruding over the surface (I'm not sure what is the preferred tool for this). Repeat using the other half in the bearing cap. Each half should protrude about .010-.015" for a total of .020-.030". Trim as necessary.
