You are describing exactly what I experienced a couple years ago. The only symptom you don't mention that I saw was fluid puking out the vent hole on the power steering pump occasionally, but that happened later on when the truck got to the point it was unsafe to drive. It took a long time to diagnose because it was intermittent and I could not make it happen on que. It ended up being a front axle U-joint that was buggered up inside. There was no play when it was checked, but one set of bearings was completely shot and would catch and bind, then let go. I didn't figure it out until I had the U-joint out of the truck.

Well I did about 120 miles today and it did not show up at all.

I might be able to pull the front shafts this weekend and check those U joints.

Another vote for u joints. Had the same experience. Because the u joint is too tight it cannot be diagnosed until you can try to move it freely out of the truck.

I have a Ford diesel mechanic ready and waiting.

I called twice, these guys never called me back. I'll be going to Ford.

That's odd...I've ordered (3) boxes from them over time for my trucks and they answered the phone every time...maybe their shut down for a week on vacation?

That was the same issue with my truck! Previous owner destroyed the steering stabilizer. Yanked it off and no more 'jerky' steering. I kinda wonder why Ford ever decided to mount the stabilizer so low, it is bound to be the first casualty when you go off-road.

Pictures of my old stabilizer, just for fun:

Kinda makes ya wonder why no one on one of these sites hasn't redesigned it due to it always getting destroyed.
