Steering made me poop a little today

You are describing exactly what I experienced a couple years ago. The only symptom you don't mention that I saw was fluid puking out the vent hole on the power steering pump occasionally, but that happened later on when the truck got to the point it was unsafe to drive. It took a long time to diagnose because it was intermittent and I could not make it happen on que. It ended up being a front axle U-joint that was buggered up inside. There was no play when it was checked, but one set of bearings was completely shot and would catch and bind, then let go. I didn't figure it out until I had the U-joint out of the truck.

Thanks. I'll call them tomorrow and see if they have one for my truck ready to go. If not and since I can't be without my truck for more than one day, maybe two (I can't have mine removed, sent to them, have them rebuild it and then sent back) I'll be taking it to Ford. I have a Ford diesel mechanic ready and waiting.

The 2nd week I had my truck we got a big snow storm in Colorado (when I still lived there) and I bent the steering stabilizer driving in the snow. I yanked it off and decided not to replace it as I figured it is the first thing to get hit and if some snow can bend it I am better off without it on there. I haven't missed it at all.
Pictures of my old stabilizer, just for fun:
