Thanks

Exhaust manifolds in general can be a pain sometimes to fix. If you do the job yourself, you may want to spray PB Blaster on all the nuts.

If you get a stubborn one, take your time trying to back it off. Back the nut off 2-3 turns then back it on a turn. Then back it out 2-3 turns, then back it on a turn.

This will help to prevent breaking a bolt. It's not 100% fool-proof but it definitely helps big time.

Breaking bolts off is the biggest problem. They aren't easy to get to anyway. Like Tony said, take your time and don't force anything. If it were me, I'd look into a good set of stainless shorty headers so I didn't have to do the change again.

My mechanic said that my bolts were way hard to get off. I think it also depends how many miles you have on the the truck. I had 130k on the clock. I ended up putting on Gibson Ceramic Coated shortys...and I love 'em, especially because I'm getting an extra 4mi to the gal!!

I took my 06 in to the dealer to verify my manifold was cracked. Turned out both were cracked, but the dealer replaced them both for free. They were covered under an "extended emissions warranty" that I think is mileage based, but I'm not sure. I just passed 55k. The service guy said he found out by doing some checks in their computer system using my VIN and the required manifold part number. I don't know the details of how he did it, but I saved about $1700.

43DUC. What state are you from? I'm from NJ and have had my left and right side replaced around 38K miles. Now at 52K miles my right side is going again. I looked in my warranty book and it looked like under the extended emissions section, exhaust manifolds aren't covered as part of the 80K miles. I think it's ridiculous that there is not some sort of massive recall on these as my local dealer says they replace these all the time. If your dealership is somewaht local to NW NJ I might stop by to see if your dealership will warranty me.

Looks to me like it's time for some stainless Ford Racing shorty headers, mlavin73. That's what I'll do when I have to replace any exhaust manifolds on my 06. Exhaust manifolds cracking is a problem that dates back to the 80's on 5.8L and 7.5L engines as well. Ford casts the manifolds as thin as possible to save a little (very little, actually) weight. The end result is premature exhaust manifold failure. And by not warrantying them they make a nice profit on the replacements. If everyone that had cracked manifolds used aftermarket shorty headers as a replacement maybe Ford would put a little better quality and more durable manifold on their trucks.
