i'm wanting to change my trans fluid and filter on my 2002 explorer xlt. it's starting to hesitate when initally going into gear. it doesn't have the dip stick and the new fluid has to be pumped in through some plugged opening in the side of the trans. what tool do i need to pump the fluid in and what is the procedure for getting the correct fluid level installed.

 

Not all of the 5r55 trans can be filled through the trans case. Some have to be filled through the fill plug in the center of the drain plug. I have always filled our mountaineer through the pipe plug in the center of the drain plug.

I have used a fluid pump that looks like a bigger pump that would be on your hand soap bottles etc, with a tube connected to it to pump the fluid through the pipe plug opening.

Last time I did it, I took some advice I have seen on this site and pumped it through using a garden sprayer which worked MUCH better. I just put the fluid in it and had the wife pump it while I held the trigger down.

To make sure I have enough fluid in it, I put 5 quarts in it, then drive it around the block to warm the fluid to temp. Then, while it's running, pull the center pipe plug and see how the fluid comes out. If it doesn't come out at all, you need more fluid. If it comes out in a heavy steam, as if you were draining it, it is over full. If it trickles out or runs out very slow it is full. I have found it takes around 5 to 5.5 quarts.
