I have a 2004 FX4 5.4 with about 113,000 miles on it. Lately, when towing the camper (around 7000 lbs), truck runs great. However, when i come to a stop, it idles horribly and even stalls sometimes. When I rev it up, runs fine again. It only does this after towing when engine is under load for extended periods of time.

The only code it has ever thrown was for bank 2 camshaft over retarded. My thought was that it could be VCT solenoid for bank 2, but hoping maybe someone with more expertise can shed some light on this problem for me.

I am going to go talk to the dealer tomorrow, but I am sure they will not be overly helpful. I hate to pay for a job I can do on my own, but also hate to buy parts I do not need. Thanks for any input anyone has.

 

Might be low oil pressure/

 

I had the same issue.. $1200 later after 2 visits to John Stuckey Ford dealership problem still was there. They replaced a VCT solenoid due to the code saying it was bad, which made no difference. I asked for the old VCT solenoid back but they said they already pitched it. Then after I told them it wasn't solved, they claimed oil passages were plugged and I needed to replace the engine. After some of my own troubleshooting, I found the oil viscosity was too low with the temps the oil was getting after a tow. I went with a higher viscosity synthetic; 10W30 or 10W40 fixed my issue. 18000 miles later and never a re-occurance.

Hopefully yours is as simple as my issue was.
