Ac compressor bearing smoked?
On my 2006 f150 Harley Davidson With the 5.4 engine , I'm getting bearing noise from the compresser pulley. Can the bearing be replaced without pulling The compressor and if need be how hard is it to replace the compressor. Looks like its jammed up there pretty good

I replaced my compressor on 06 4.6 this weekend due to clutch bearing noise. Since I have a close to 100,000 miles went this route instead of new clutch assembly . System was working properly prior to removal. New Motorcraft (not reman) compressor with clutch, pulley & o-rings was $210 shipped from Rock Auto (no core charge). Took about an hour. You need a small stubby 10 MM wrench to take off the bolt on top that secures the a/c hoses. One electrical plug on top and three easy access bolt on the bottom.
I think it would be pretty tuff to get a puller on the clutch assembly to get it off with the compressor installed. Not much room in the front due to fan and shroud.

Shut off the AC compressor and see if the noise goes away. If it remains it is either the Clutch Bearing or an idler bearing. Usually metal chips are near a bad clutch on the compressor. Blow off the thing with compressed air and see if it quiets down. Remove the belt and jiggle the pulleys, it may actually be a water pump or idler. I take it the AC functions just fine? Clutch replacement is a tool job. Compressor replacement is an equipment job.

Looking at the Ford service manual they appear to be the same. Only reference to difference is on 4x4 which requires removing skid plate, fan, and shroud. I have a pdf of the Ford Sevice Manual covering a/c compressor and a/c clutch replacement. If you want a copy PM me your email address.
