Mine is making a similar clunking noise and there is slack in the driveline when you get off the gas. After reading a few threads I'm thinking the slipjoint needs lubed with Teflon grease.

It's the transmission making the banging noise. Had my dad rock it while i crawled under to listen, sounds like it's dead center in the transmission case... Maybe it's linked to all the crapy shifting I've had.

Called Ford and they said there is a service bulliton on the clunking from the transmission... Bulletin says it's normal and not to attempt repairs... guess I'm stuck with it for now.

No way I'd settle with 'that's normal' for an answer. My truck would be at my dealer and they would fix it. Replace the entire tranny if needed. 60k for a truck that clunks brand new?? No way.

I agree with Andrew. Did you drop the pan for a look? Or has the dealer done so? Might be worth taking it to a reputable trans shop for another opinion. Somethings not right. You can start to build a story line by obtaining other professional opinions about what the cause is and that might give you more fighting power with Ford? Go to another dealership or three?

If you take your front drive shaft off and look down in it , there is a round metal plate that should be blocking your view. If you do not see it, that is the problem. the plate has came loose and is banging back and fourth inside the driveshaft. I have read ever other soultion to the banging, clanking.clunking noise or what ever you want to call it but this is what my problem was. After cleaning the inside of the driveshatf and letting the plate slide down to the end , I put JB weld on it. Problem gone. Hope this help someone.

I know this is reviving an old thread, and I hope this is acceptable on this forum, but this was VERY helpful information and I am going to attempt this slip joint regrease prob for no other reason than its never been done, I am sure.

Now, my question is I am having this same issue on my 4wd LOW only as I have a ZF 5 spd manual. Anyone else?

06 E350 box truck

Mine "clunks" at about 15 mph and once I come to a stop again it "clunks" and will actually push the truck foreward a few inches. I would bring it back to the dealer if still under warranty and tell them what it's doing and show them if possible. My truck Is now out of warranty from ford but this un-resolved rear end issue Is the reasion I got an aftermarket warranty. Keep us posted as I'm interested to know how this turns out. Good luck!
I see this was posted long ago but maybe you remember what the ultimate repair was for this problem. My 06 E350 box truck is doing this exact thing when I come to a stop. Bought it 2 years ago with 50k on the clock and it would happen once in awhile. Now with 62k it happens more often. Dealer said they put in on a dyno to check the shift points and all was normal. They couldn't recreate the problem on there test drive of coarse. Did you ever figure out a fix for this clunk when easing to a stop? I'm selling the truck here soon and I'm trying to button up the little things so the buyer feels they got there money worth. Appreciate your time.
