99-03 F250 Tire/Rim Size?

Hey guys,
In the final stretch of a truck purchase, I've noticed that the tires on many of the stock trucks almost look too small for such a large truck. My question is, what is a tire/rim combination that would give me a bit of more clearance and offroad capability while still keeping a tire smooth and quiet (well as smooth and quiet as you can get with a 7.3 diesel) ride? I've looked at the BFG All-Terrains. All help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Frank

Wheel size can make a significant difference in the appearance of a truck. Go to the link below to view various applications of lifts, wheels, and tires.

http://www.trucktoyzperformance.com/...earch-blue.php

Here are a few examples:

2000 Super Duty - 2" Leveling Kit - 16" Wheels - 33" Tall Tires

2005 Super Duty - 2.5" Leveling Kit - 18" Wheels - 35" Tall Tires

2002 Super Duty - 2" Leveling Kit - 20" Wheels - 33" Tall Tires

2003 Super Duty - 2" Leveling Kit - 22" Wheels - 35" Tall Tires

Comment: While the combination above looks cool for the street, it isn't squat for off-roading!

Personally, if I were purchasing new wheels, then I would select either 18" or 20" depending on the tire size. I would match 18" wheels to tires up to 37" tall. I would match 20" wheels to tires 38" and taller. The trend from the tire manufacturers is to make tall tires for 20" and 22" wheels.

The stock tires are about 31" tall and these are 34" They fill out the wheels nice and ride great with just a little bit of road noise.

All of the pics are over on my other thread:

Those are some nice looking trucks! I'm more of a sleek industrial look as in the very first picture. There is a great tire place that my family has gone to for all three vehicles for years and im sure they would be willing to help with fitting and trying everything out. I'll be sure to post pictures when i get the truck and when i make the tire changes!

I removed the BF Goodrich 285/75/r16's and put on Cooper 265/75/R-16's. These Discoverer ATP's are all terrain but designed for improved road handling as well. Not too blocky and sleek. I love 'em! My truck is all stock as far as supension goes.

305/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers

I have a 2.5 inch lift with 305/70/17 Nitto terra grapplers. I love the sound, ride quality and traction.

After melting off 2 sets of BFG AT's I just pulled the trigger on the Cooper ATP's at Discount Tire. The BFG's rendered 33k @ 29k total miles costing me over $2k for both sets. I ran about 3000 miles on the wear bars on my last set to get my moneys worth, the few months of hundred degree temps made that safe enough. They did wear evenly and were quiet but did not stay balanced and with those mileage results and total costs they are not worth another dime, ever.

I run the stock 265-75-16's and the OTD price was less than $850 and that includes the tire replacement option. Oh, did I mention they are warrantied to 5500 miles, crazy eh? I've only had them a few days and they are quite around town, you can hear a little rubber on the ground noise at 40-50 mph that sounds a bit like your driving on a wet road. I always drive with my windows down and had to turn off the radio and really listen to hear it, I'll see how that goes after some major breakin miles. At CA highway speeds of 65-75 you can hear a minor hum, there is way more noise coming off the cars passing me than I can hear from the ATP's. The ride is smooth and sure.
I wanted to post this review as my early impression and will update this with more info after towing my toy hauler to the desert this Halloween.

It's been quite a while since I've looked back at this thread! The truck came with Falken Wildcat AT's and they are very smooth on the road and gripped the sand and mud off-road with ease! I'm getting a little taller tires next time but right now i'm pretty good on tread.

The Cooper ATP and AT3 are different tires. The AT3's have a traditional tread and the ATP's kind of resemble Revo's. You can only purchase the ATP's at Discount or Americas Tire.
