can u use newer style glow plug controller on 86 6.9

Hey Ive tried searching but havent found the information im looking for.

Im wondering If it is possible to take the newer style glow plug controller and use it on the 6.9L

can I just find a wiring harness from a newer style and get the controller and hook it up?

I have a 86 f250 6.9L my current glow plug controller doesnt work and Im worried about pulling it out to replace.

the newer style looks like its just a normal relay on the top so I figure it should work but in not sure?

are the glow plugs the same?

the glow plugs are FUNCTIONALLY the same, but have different plugs between them. one system uses blade connectors, the other uses bullet connectors. obviously, the wire harness must match the plugs you use.
that said, it shouldn't take too many parts to switch it over. having not done it myself, the most i expect it to need is the controller and wire harness.
but i have to ask why you want to switch styles? do you have a donor truck, or is it a parts availability or price issue? or do you just think the newer system is "better"

well i dont really want to screw around pulling the old controller out if I dont have to. seeing how its aluminum in a steel intake mainifold and hasnt been changed in a long time. Ive heard horror stories about removing the older style controller.

Ive also heard it works better

I once thought about switching to the 7.3 style myself but went to a toggle switch with a light instead. I had the 6.9 controller get stuck in the block and I basically had to break it out piece by piece it was so bad. I like to have it in my control and the light tells me if I have power to the plugs. The reason I had to remove the controller is because it malfunctioned and burned out all my new glow plugs. But if you want a controller and like the 7.3 unit you'll just have to mess around with a few wires is all.

it seems alot easier to hook up the newer style controller then removing the old one.

seeing how i need to buy all new glow plugs anyways i might do it this way

$70 on ebay for a manual controller with a new h.d. solenoid wiring and instructions. i put one all of my trucks, and wire it up so the factory wait to start light comes on when i hit the switch. pete

Umm just a thought, if u go to a newer style of Gp controller be sure to change the glow plugs as the 7.3l has 12v and if im not mistaken the 6.9 has 6v glow plugs, so the 7.3 controller may run a bit too long for the 6v glow plugs and damage them.

well i just called my parts guy to realize these controller are pretty expensive!! list price was 330 and my price was closer to 200 but

still alot more expensive then a new older style relay and push start. so for now thats what im going to do.

maybe throw the gm 6.5L glow plugs in
