the glow plugs are FUNCTIONALLY the same, but have different plugs between them. one system uses blade connectors, the other uses bullet connectors. obviously, the wire harness must match the plugs you use.
that said, it shouldn't take too many parts to switch it over. having not done it myself, the most i expect it to need is the controller and wire harness.
but i have to ask why you want to switch styles? do you have a donor truck, or is it a parts availability or price issue? or do you just think the newer system is "better"
well i dont really want to screw around pulling the old controller out if I dont have to. seeing how its aluminum in a steel intake mainifold and hasnt been changed in a long time. Ive heard horror stories about removing the older style controller.
I once thought about switching to the 7.3 style myself but went to a toggle switch with a light instead. I had the 6.9 controller get stuck in the block and I basically had to break it out piece by piece it was so bad. I like to have it in my control and the light tells me if I have power to the plugs. The reason I had to remove the controller is because it malfunctioned and burned out all my new glow plugs. But if you want a controller and like the 7.3 unit you'll just have to mess around with a few wires is all.
$70 on ebay for a manual controller with a new h.d. solenoid wiring and instructions. i put one all of my trucks, and wire it up so the factory wait to start light comes on when i hit the switch. pete

Umm just a thought, if u go to a newer style of Gp controller be sure to change the glow plugs as the 7.3l has 12v and if im not mistaken the 6.9 has 6v glow plugs, so the 7.3 controller may run a bit too long for the 6v glow plugs and damage them.
dont throw GM 6.5 plugs in...ive heard a few horror stories, just get motorcrafts and a push start taht has the WTS light come on when you push in the switch....better idea all the way around...
