How many fuel filters 86

How many fuel filters are there in a 86 f150 5.0. Ive been changing everything out to get her to run a lil better. I replaced the inline one and seen the black canister behind the high pressure pump. Is there a filter in there? If so do you need to replace it or just keep it out? What is the purpose of the canister? I was going to try to open it but a little worried to break it since its plastic. If i did break it I wouldnt know where to find one

Just the one...canister type on the drivers side frame rail before the high pressure pump. You do need to replace it. Drain pressure off the system by tripping the inertia switch and trying to start the truck, then just turn the lower plastic part of the canister off. It's easy with a strap wrench.

You actually have a low pressure pump in the tank as well. That's why its good to bleed pressure off the system before opening the canister. There also is a large but very thin O-ring seal that seals the canister. It's a PIA to get in place.

Yeah when i got the truck i put on a new tank sending unit and low pressure pump and I replaced the metal inline filter. recently she start running like crap so ive been giving it a tune up. When I went to get a fuel filter there was two options. The inline and a little cardboard hockey puck looking thing. Thats what got me thinking it could be in there. I hope its a simple fix like that. The truck sat from 03 till last january when I got it im sure it needs replaced
