'98 Explorer - MAS Making a Whine Noise

There's a high pitched whine type noise coming from my Mass Airflow Sensor. I can get it to go away temporarily if I goose the gas pedal, but it comes back after a minute or two. Has not affected drive-ability, but it's pretty annoying. It sounds like the hot wire is probably vibrating.

Is there any fix for it, or do I have to replace the sensor to get rid of it?? Have tried cleaning it, but that did not help.

Removed and Cleaned IAS 5x

Removed and cleaned IAS five times. Some of the cleanings made the noise worse, and some made it slightly better. Either way, it soon returns to it's annoying old level. Before I take the plunge and get a new unit, is there anything else I should try? I've checked and tightened all connections in the air intake system, and installed a new air filter.

Uhm, Ok, we have incorrect terminology all over here.

Its MAF, not MAS, its IAC, not IAC or ISC.

Yes, it is common for the IAC to start vibrating and buzzing. It usually means its worn out. Replace it with a Motorcraft part, many aftermarket ones are short lived, and cause idle control problems. The Motorcraft one doesn't cost much more than the el-cheapo ones, go with the OE part for the fewest problems.

.

There was no intent to us incorrect terminology, on my QWERTY key board the "S" and "A" rub shoulders, it was an honest TYPO.....

You may have missed the "id" instead of "is", same row, same fat fingers....... Philip

OK..will do

Sorry about acronym incorrectness. After the last cleaning the IAC started to act flaky, and the engine began to die at idle. Have a new Motocraft part arriving in about an hour. Will pick up, change, and I expect to be poorer but less annoyed.

Thanks, all, for the assistance - especially for directing me to the source of the problem.

Closeout

Changed IAC and all is right. Engine idles smoothly without any whine type noise. Lesson learned for me is that if first cleaning does not solve the problem best to just bite the bullet and replace it. Again, thanks for the assistance!
