1976 Owners Manual
#2
I'm new to this site and wasn't sure how to pm yet. Anyway, I've got a 1976 F-100 Ranger Stepside and saw your post about a '76 owner's manual. My truck was basically handed down to me, and I know little about it. I'm trying to get it running and everything again, so any literature on it would be great.

Not a lawyer but I wondered whether the copyright had expired which would empower anyone with a good copy of this manual to create a PDF copy of it and share it widely. Here is what I found out from the Googleatron:
From copyright.gov:
Apparently there was a big change in copyright law that affected works created after 1978. Thus, a different set of rules created in 1909 apply to this manual which was published in 1976.
The first 28 year term has elapsed (2004). If Ford renewed the copyright, it won't expire until 2032.

From copyright.gov:
How long does a copyright last? The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors. To determine the length of copyright protection for a particular work, consult chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code). More information on the term of copyright can be found in Circular 15a, Duration of Copyright, and Circular 1, Copyright Basics.
Duration under 1909 Act
Federal standards for copyright duration differ substantially under the 1909 act compared with the 1976 act because
of the renewal term contained in the 1909 act. Under the 1909 act, federal copyright was secured on the date a work was published or, for unpublished works, on the date of registration. A copyright lasted for a first term of 28 years from the date it was secured. The copyright was eligible
for renewal during the final, that is, 28th year, of the first term. If renewed, the copyright was extended for a second, or renewal, term of 28 years. If it was not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term, and the work is no longer protected by copyright. The term of copyright for works published with a year date in the notice that is earlier than the actual date of publication is computed from the year date in the copyright notice.
