Question on adding Motorcraft Coolant Revitalizer
Hi folks-
My 2016 F-350 has about 42,000 miles on it and I’m planning on going to Alaska (from VA) in a couple of months. It should be about a 15,000 mile trip +/-.
I have had the Check Coolant Additive light come on at 15 and 30K and taken it to the dealer who said it was fine. I have heard that at 45K is when dealers are starting to see the need to add the Revitalizer.
Since I will be on the road when that happens (and could be in the middle of nowhere) I’m wondering what the best course of action should be.
1. Do I bring it to the dealer now and have them run the test?
2. Do I buy the Revitalizer now and add it when the light comes on?
3. Do I just not worry about it until I get home?
Your advise and comments are welcome.
Thanks!

It has been my experience that it is less expensive and less time consuming to just add the revitalizer twice during the life of the coolant. The diesel supplement says you can add 48oz to the primary, 16oz to the secondary over the life of the coolant. So half that splits a quart nicely. I’ve done that (added a quart split 24/8) at 30k, 62k, changed coolant at 104k, then revitalized again at 133k, 162k and changed again at 204k. If your coolant system has been compromised or you don’t know the whole repair history you probably should run the test, but otherwise I’d just add the VC12.

Thanks everyone.
I bought the truck new so I know there has been nothing added except the correct M.C. antifreeze (only about a pint) from the beginning. I read that we actually have two separate cooling systems but can’t seem to find out how to access the second one. Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks.

Good luck on your trip, and enjoy! Give yourself a peace of mind and go ahead and flush the coolant, change the oil & filter, change the fuel filters, check your air filter, and take spare fuel and oil filters with you just in case. DEF is readily available along the way. Make sure you take time to stop, smell the roses, and take a lot of pictures. It's a great drive. I've done it three times, and the last time was with my F350 pulling a car hauler enclosed trailer. Don't do the trip before mid-May if you can help it. I did it the end of April, and I encountered a lot of road up North that was badly frost heaved in the Canadian and Alaskan sections on both sides of the border. There were sections of the Alaskan road that was in bad need of repair too. Just take your time, and good luck! What's your destination point in Alaska?

The coolant is good for more than 100,000 miles. I had that check coolant come on like OP said and I dropped by the dealer and they said don't worry about it till 60,000 miles than test and add rejuvenation junk if necessary. Follow the manufactures recommendations and you can't go wrong. I have conversations with my diesel mechanic all the time. I ask him questions and that's is where I get a lot of information that is buried in the book somewhere.

I think I’m going to just bring it to the dealer and have it tested next month for peace of mind. I just received a new batch of MC filters and will be doing a full fluid and filter change prior to leaving.
Our rough route will be to leave VA mid May, go to Banf & Jasper NP then drop down to Bellingham WA. to catch the AK ferry to Haines (we are somewhat re-creating a trip my wife took as a kid). That will put us in Alaska proper about the 10th of June. From there we’ll be heading down to Valdez then spend some time on the Kenai peninsula before going North and spending a few days in Denali then up to Barrow and dipping our toes into the Arctic Ocean.
After that we’ll make our way into the Yukon and drive north up to Tuk to once again go to the Arctic Ocean before making our way South down the Alcan, stopping along the way to “smell the roses” The trip should be about 15 months and about 15,000 miles...
We’ll be staying in our Hallmark pop up truck camper and will be taking 2 spares..
Here’s a picture of our rig (we will not be taking the trailer on this trip).
