HELP - 99-03, 7.3 POWERSTROKE / LANDCRUISER
#31
Here is a link to a build up where a guy put a 7.3 in a IH Scout 80. If one will fit in a scout im sure with your determination you can get one into your landcruiser. A Scout 80 followed me home - Page 6 - Binder Bench
Page 6 is where he actually starts the engine install. He uses a 96 7.3 with an attached ZF 5 speed. Just thought it might help you get prepared for some of the small things that might come up during your build.
If the engine offers youve already had dont work out, my only idea would be to search craigslist in the area of your shipper in CA for someone parting out a ford that you could get the whole engine, trans, transfer case and all wiring and other small things from and have them remove them and take them to your shipping contact. And maybe someone here would be close enough by to go check it all out for you first. If you dont have any other luck, I'll keep an eye out for one here in TX.

Hey Brad, your post caught my interest. I am a Toyota builder guy.
And a BIG fan of the Toyota drivetrain components, even given their limitations (which can be built around using aftermarket modified parts, and not a lot of them).
My drivetrain is in part Landcruiser. I am running a supercharged 3.4L 24V V6 Toy motor and 86 turbo tranny, 20 fwd speeds, 4 reverse, 4.88 gearing, modified birfields in the front, full floater in the rear, and without issue. My truck is lighter than your SA cruisers in all likelihood but not by a lot (note the armor).
That said, a 7.3 would take out my drivetrain in a bushfire second and with pretty much the same effect.
The 4BT is indeed a very popular conversion and a worthy one. That's the way to go mate.
Although... hmmm... a 7.3L with a PSD drivetrain under a Cruiser... hmmm... HMMM...
(One of our clubmembers put an FJ45 body on an FZJ80 chassis and ended up with a fantabulous truck, reliable, strong, luxurious ride, beautiful paint, on 44s, that will do anything he wishes... so it can be done).
Good luck!

Another Question
Is there a source where I can get complete manuals, pictures, diagrams, DVD's, and any other info on the 7.3 and the ZF6 and transfer case. As comprehensive as possible - all wiring, censors, fuse boxes etc. - Absolutely Everything......?
Would like to have any hard copies shipped with my 1st engine and transmission...

Here is some general stuff you can print out:
DTS Articles - Coffee Table Books
Ebay is probably one of the best places to pick up hard copy manuals.
Emissions diagnostic manual is a good one to get for the year engine you end up buying.
Here is another great online resource where you can print stuff:
ALLDATAdiy.com Leading Source of Factory Automotive Repair Information
Can't beat this for a wiring diagram, take the file to the local engineer to print:

p.s.
i have to ditto on the powertrain holding up to the stroker...
the badassness you witnessed in that truck was not just the motor...
the 4r100 is a marvel all into itself. to make all the rediculous torque from the 7.3 pull an 11,000lb truck hard enough give you the giggles requires a whole lot going on behind the scenes... also...
suspension...
these things weigh half a ton.
what will that do when you hit the muck/sand with your wheelbase?
need to change out front suspension to beef it up
been thinking about stuffing one in my 82 f150... keep us posted eh?
xtof

I think your referring to the motor, but IIRC it weights 1400 lbs dry.

4r100 is the auto trans the ZF6 is the 6speed trans.
and here is a PDF if the shop manual
Workshop Manuals - 1999 SD 250-550 - PowerStrokeNation : Ford Powerstroke Diesel Forum
and there is not that much to get them to run just stuff the computers in the dash and the rest is easy.

No headers for this engine since it has a turbo but there is at least one company offering a S/S option for an aftermarket turbo mount kit: Untitled 1
I'm not aware of any S/S exhaust manifold options for the 7.3, there are some available for the 5.9 cummins though.

7.3l Tubular Manifolds
They do offer a performance increase, but the biggest noted change is the sound of the truck. You can youtube it for more info.
