Small Block Ford Water Pump Choice

I need some input on what water pump to run on my 289. Either right side or left side. If I run the left side it will be hard to set the timing. I don't think running the right side will affect anything on my pulley set up. I am just concerned about picking the wrong one and need some help from those who have a small block ford in a F1 truck. Mine is a 1949

What year is the 289?

The early engines (before 8/23/1964) have a 5 hole bolt pattern on the block for the bell/converter housing, use a different timing cover and water pump (both are aluminum) than the later (from 8/23/1964) 289's that used a different pump and cover.

Sorry, I forgot to say it is a 1965 so either right or left side pump would work. I was hoping some one has a picture of a set up so I can look at it

There are several choices in ford's small block ( 289,302,351 ) water pumps and it really boils down to the timing cover. Your timing cover is set up for a standard flow water pump which was used on the early blocks 65 thru 69 v-belt driven. There was an aluminum high performance pump but it took a different timing cover. You've narrowed it down as to the year and with the help of a competent auto parts counter person you should be able to get the correct pump just be sure your not bolting up a reverse flow pump to a standard flow timing cover.
Here's a little article on the ford v8 cooling systems which will help clarify-

It really comes down to the radiator........ is it a passenger side connection or driver side? Pump should come out on the side that matches the rad as it is easier.
But that being said I am running a driver side drop water pump, to a passenger side rad connection on my 351W. Some rad hose, a piece of exhaust pipe, couple of clampes and it has worked for 10 years no problems.

No 289's after 1968, as this was its last year. 302 introduced Spring 1968 in cars, in 1969 F100/Bronco & Econoline.

There was an aluminum high performance pump but it took a different timing cover.
No such thing as a HiPo only timing cover.
1963/64 and 1965 260/289 before production date 8/23/1964 used a different bolt pattern on the block (5 bolts) where the bell housing or converter housing bolts on.

These engines use an aluminum water pump and timing cover.

1965 289 from 8/23/1964 have a 6 bolt pattern on the rear of the block, use a different water pump. The timing cover is cast iron, same timing cover used on 302 thru the 1970's.

Thanks, This info helps and I don't have the radiator yet so I am leaning to the pump that has the hose on the right side

My original 351W water pump had the inlet on the driver side, but my radiator hose was on the passenger side. I made a pointer and bolted it to an existing mount boss on the driver side and then used timing tape to locate timing marks to use this new pointer.

Good ideal, I ordered one that was on the right side but it didn't have the mounting holes I needed for my alt and power steering so I went back with the one on the left side so I could use the set up I have
